A walk through life toward eternity

The THIS & THAT of the CHRIST-CENTERED WALK

“Therefore, laying aside falsehood,

  • SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR,
  • for we are members of one another.
  • BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN;
  • do not let the sun go down on your anger,
  • and do not give the devil an opportunity.
  • He who steals must steal no longer;
  • but rather he must labor,
  • performing with his own hands what is good,
  • so that he will have something to share with one who has need.”
(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 4: 25-28 NASB)

Therefore is an introducing word, introducing a new sentence; however, therefore is also a connecting word, connecting what is about to be said to what was just previously said.  Thus, therefore is a transition, standing in the gap between that & this.

The THIS—STRIVE DAILY TO BE LIKE CHRIST!

“So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,

  • being darkened in their understanding,
  • excluded from the life of God
  • because of the ignorance that is in them,
  • because of the hardness of their heart;

and they,

  • having become callous,
  • have given themselves over to sensuality
  • for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

But you did not learn Christ in this way,

  • if indeed you have heard Him
  • and have been taught in Him,
  • just as truth is in Jesus,

that, in reference to your former manner of life,

  • you lay aside the old self,
  • which is being corrupted
  • in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

and put on the new self,

which in the likeness of God

has been created in righteousness

and holiness of the truth.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 4: 17-24 NASB)

The THAT—STRIVE DAILY TO BE LIKE CHRIST!

About two years into his conversion, from church persecutor to church planter, the apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Ephesus that he helped plant.  In writing to them, Paul spoke of the way they were to act NOW THAT THEY ARE CHRISTIANS.

  1. “laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR,”
  2. “BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger,”
  3. “do not give the devil an opportunity.”
  4. “He who steals must steal no longer;”
  5. “he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good,”
  6. “share with one who has need.”

“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander
be put away from you, along with all malice.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 4: 29-31 NASB)

The Holy Spirit is moving & breathing inside each believer, inside every Christian.  He is the most-intimate part of every person who has given his heart to Jesus.  The Holy Spirit makes us fit for God.

  1. “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth,”
  2. Speak only “a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment,”
  3. The words we speak to one another should “give grace to those who hear.”
  4. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,”
  5. “you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
  6. “Let all bitterness”
  7. “and wrath”
  8. “and anger”
  9. “and clamor”
  10. “and slander be put away from you” [from all Christians]
  11. “along with all malice.”

This is the THIS—ALL CHRISTIANS SHOULD STRIVE DAILY TO PUT OFF SO THAT WE CAN BECOME MORE LIKE CHRIST!

&

This is the THAT—ALL CHRISTIANS SHOULD STRIVE DAILY TO PUT ON SO THAT WE CAN BECOME MORE LIKE CHRIST!

  • Our family is universal; we are each brothers & sisters of Jesus Christ.
  • Our family is to work together, straining as the body of Christ Jesus.

We belong to God; we are His forevermore!

Our inheritance is ours to share; nevertheless, the Holy Spirit gives to each of us independent assignments that He creates just for us to do within this world until the Lord Jesus calls us home to heaven.

  • Let us strive each day to put off the things that look like the “old us” &
  • Let us strive every single day to also put on the things that make us look more like the “new us” that we have received from our Savior Jesus Christ.

Now at the end of it all, after the list of what we should wear in newness & what we must put off from our old self, we come to the WHY—REMINDING EACH OF US WHAT JESUS CHRIST HAS DONE FOR US.

“Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other,
just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 4: 32 NASB)
