DOING As A Child Knows to DO
Doing. It is a small, simple word with a forward thought, one that commands the thinker, the speaker, or the writer of the word to action—DO. When coupled with the ending “ING,” then we find a word of present tense revealing how one is “currently” DO—ING.
Howard Hendricks wrote these words concerning the word “Doing.”
The Bible was not written to satisfy your curiosity;
It was written to transform your life.”
May we consider for a moment a typical day in the life of a parent. We see the parents possibly arising from the bed prior to the children; we see them preparing a hot drink to help brush away the sleepiness of the morning from their eyes; and we see these same parents gently shaking their children to help them also arise in order to begin the day.
Oftentimes, it is the parents who prepare and maintain the schedules to be kept, and it is the children who follow the lead of their parents in order to not stray or falter from the schedules of life that must be maintained. Children go & do, based upon the parents’ leadership. If anyone has noticed children who do not follow the leadership of their parents, then we have seen the chaos that can occur when guidance is not provided or when obedience is not given to the one guiding.
- Is this not the same with us: God’s children?
- Is this not the way God intended when He sent Jesus to earth as the Savior?
- Is the leadership of God provided for the guidance of His children the way in which we (the children of God) grow to become more like the Son, walk more in His image?
The Apostle Paul writes in God’s Word (to the church in Ephesus) and speaks of the blessings of redemption and the mission of the church but do not believe me; READ with me & SEE.
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things in the church, which is the body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
(Ephesians 1: 18-23)
The blessings of redemption are found in the “Doing.”
The blessings of the redemption are found when “the eyes of our heart may be enlightened.”
The blessings of the redemption are found in “the hope of His calling.”
“His inheritance in the saints, [the children of God]” and “the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe” in found in the doing, the seeing with the eyes of our heart, and in His calling (18-19).
God never sends us to “DO” anything alone. He never sends us unequipped but instead equips the called. We are led by the Father to “DO” His will, to follow Him, and we are ensured that He will equip us to “DO” the task he has called us to “DO.”
Thus, as a believer, as a Christian, as a child of God, we are not meant to study God’s Word, meditate upon God’s Word, and memorize God’s Word ONLY for the sake of study, meditation, and memorization!
NO!
We are called to study, meditate, and memorize God’s Word so we are better equipped to OBEY GOD’S WORD, to live differently within the world, speaking to those who do not yet believe, demonstrating God’s love—just as those before us demonstrated for us when we were not yet the children of God. Transformation is an action word, a changing, a work from within to reveal a change to the outer being. Meaning—those who share time with us should know by our SPEECH, ACTIONS, REACTIONS, & THOUGHTS that we belong to God the Father. They should know we are His children as we share time together, as we live, as we talk, as we “DO” the things God calls us to do.
The ability to “DO” the will of the Father is found in “power” of God seen through “the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, . . .” (19-21) Unbelievers should see God through our “DOING” just as believers see God at work when we obediently “DO” what He has called us to “DO.”
Salvation & Sanctification—Such wonderful Truth. Jesus Christ rules not only in this present age, but He will rule in the age to come. Knowing the Truth—that we (the body, the church) are the fullness of Him & that He fills us “all in all” with the fullness of Him provides us guidance and leadership to follow Him.
So, yes, “DOING” is a simple word with a forward thought, & “DOING” is one that commands us to action—to “DO” whatever He calls us to “DO.” Also true, “DOING” is a present tense word revealing how one is “currently DOING” the will of the Father.
So, let us not just be curious, seeing what lies within God’s Word as a way to satisfy our curiosity, but let us allow God’s Word to transform us as we Live Out, as we DO as a child knows to DO.
Today, I end my writing with this thought: Since traveling to my daughter’s home, I have thoroughly enjoyed a beautiful time visiting. God has provided this most wonderful Christmas gift for me, and I am so thankful. I have since taken the train to another home and enjoyed the gift of visiting with others God has given me to love. In the coming and in the going, I am fully aware of the calling God has placed upon my heart. Whether I will become obedient to God is left unto me to decide, just as the obedience of each child of God is left individually to each one of us. Sanctification is Transformation—”Doing” the will of the Father as we walk with Him toward our eternal home.
The Holy Spirit reminds us daily—even today—of the important work God provides for us to DO as we Journey through life. We DO the Father’s because we have received:
“a spirit of wisdom and [the] revelation in the knowledge of Him.”
(Ephesians 1:17)
