The Promise Came!
When we receive a promise, it would be a highly unusual action if we set aside the covenant or if we added to what had already been promised. When a promise is made, it holds true. For a moment, let us look to one who lived long ago, one who was led outside his tent and instructed to look up toward the sky to see the stars. When we look up at a starry night sky, then we understand the truth: There are too many to count.
The promise made to the man Abram, who leaned back to gaze up at the stars, was childless, and yet, he was promised by God Himself that his (Abram’s) inheritance would be a blessing to generations to come.
Sometimes, God offers us opportunities to believe in the impossible, to stretch our faith, to lead us to the place the Lord wishes us to go. Abram’s wife Sarai did soon become pregnant, and to many watching, the birth of Isaac would have seemed the fulfillment of the promise. Yes, Isaac would grow up to become a man who would father children, and those children would grow and father more children. The whole nation of Israel would come from that original promise the LORD GOD made to HIS servant Abram (who became Father Abraham, a man of many sons).
But have you ever paused to consider if the LORD meant more when HE made the promise to Abram?
The apostle Paul wrote to the believers living in Galatia:
“Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.
(The Letter of Paul to the Galatians 3: 16 NASB)
He does not say, [meaning God did not say to Abraham]
“And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one,
“And to your seed,”
that is, Christ.”
Centuries after God gave Abraham His promise, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The promise given that all families would be BLESSED came to fruition in CHRIST JESUS.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, . . .”
(The Gospel According to John 3: 16a NASB)
For those who know the rest of the story, then we understand how the promise came into the world on a starry night when a “single star” was shining over a child, the same star that led the magi from the east to walk hundreds of miles from the east to seek the Messiah, the one who these wise men knew was coming. Jesus Came. The Advent, the first coming.
- As Abram stood outside, gazing up at the starry night, God did not say: “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, . . .” (The Letter of Paul to the Galatians 3: 16a NASB)
- When he received God’s promise, it was not a single-family promise given to just one man, but God’s promise was given to ALL—“that is, Christ.” (The Letter of Paul to the Galatians 3: 16b NASB)

So many will attend church this coming week, celebrating the birth of Jesus, the babe in the manger, but for those who have received Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, then they know the promise resides in the REST OF THE STORY—THE MANGER TO THE CROSS TO THE GRAVE TO THE RESURRECTION & TO THE ASCENSION BACK TO HEAVEN.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
(The Gospel According to John 3:16 NASB)
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
