A walk through life toward eternity

We Either Are—or—We are not!

We always have a choice, a decision, and a turning this way or that when a question is posed.  How we go about making our choice, or about deciding, or even how we allow ourselves to turn a certain way or not is so important. As followers of Jesus, we are led by the Holy Spirit of God, given to us at our spiritual birth, and we can obey Him—or not—doing the will of God—or not—and listening as He leads—or not.

In the Bible, we find the narratives of the children of Israel, reading of the way the LORD led them out of bondage into freedom, how the LORD led them through the desert to the Jordan River, and then how the LORD defeated the city of Jericho, their first adversary in the Promise Land.  As we walk through these scenes, we see a people much like us, walking through life, facing decisions of obedience, following God, and then deciding to not follow but to go their own way.  The narratives are chronicled and even sung throughout The Psalms.  It is there, in the praises that we are reminded today of our faithfulness:  We Either Are—or—We are not!

“We have sinned like our fathers,
We have committed iniquity,
we have behaved wickedly.
Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders;
They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses,
But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name,
That He might make His power known.
Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up,
And He led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness.
So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them,
And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
The waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them was left.
Then they believe
d His words;
They sang His praise.”

(The Psalms 106: 6-12 NASB)

See the history of the children of Israel, how God led Jacob’s descendants, even though they were conceived in iniquity, just like us.  We read how their masters in Egypt worshipped other gods and did not see the truth of Holy God. We see how God raised up a man among them, Moses, who led them to escape bondage and walk toward their freedom.  Not many verses later, we see within their exodus, how they face a mighty sea, the Red Sea, and through faith, they see the way God rolls back the water making a way for them to walk across the bed of the sea on dry ground.  Then, we read how they stood on the other side, looking back toward the massive Egyptian army advancing with their chariots, even quaking in their sandals at the thundering hooves coming toward them, people on foot, not mighty warriors but regular people, just like us.  It is then, that we see the way the LORD saves them over and again, rolling the waters of the Red Sea overtop Pharaoh’s army, and we see the way the enemy was defeated, how not a single man survived.

“Then they believed His words;
They sang His praise.”

(The Psalms 106: 12 NASB)
  • All is well.
  • They are saved.
  • Bondage is behind them.
  • They survived.

Now, they must walk forward in faith to the One, to God, marching the path the LORD has them to go.

However, that is not what we read in the Word of God.

We do not see their trust, nor do we read the faithful walk of believing children of Israel, for the Scriptures tell the whole story. We see the whole truth & only the TRUTH of GOD’S WORD!

“They quickly forgot His works;
They did not wait for His counsel,
But craved intensely in the wilderness,
And tempted God in the desert.
So He gave them their request,
But sent a wasting disease among them.”

(The Psalms 106: 13-15 NASB)

Throughout The Psalms, it is there, in the praises of the children of Israel, that we are reminded today of our faithfulness:  We Either Are—or—We are not!

  • Do we wait for the counsel of the LORD?
  • Do we trust Him in the moment of distress, but then quickly forget the way HE moved us through to the other side?
  • Do we praise our Father in one moment, but then turn away, returning to our former loves when we think “all is well”?
  • Do we really want to walk through the plan God has ordained?

Do we TRUST the LORD, depending on HIM to know what is best for us?

Thank goodness, the Bible provides so many life-narratives of believers walking in faithfulness to God. Through their example, we see how to walk in belief, in obedience, in trust, and how, like them, we too are able to be witnesses in this world to people wandering in darkness, in lostness.

After the crucifixion, after the burial, after the resurrection, after the disciples and after hundreds of believers had seen the risen Lord Jesus Christ—AFTER ALL THAT—we read of the ascension of Jesus Christ back to heaven.

“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.
When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
At this time Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together), and said,
Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.”

(The Acts of the Apostles 1: 12-16 NASB)

Jesus’ arrest.  Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus’ burial in the tomb for three days.  Jesus’ resurrection.  Jesus’ ascension back to heaven—ALL PART OF GOD’S PLAN OF REDEMPTION FOR MANKIND!

Then we read the list of who was gathered there, gathered in the upper room where they had shared time with the Lord Jesus.

  • Such an eclectic group of apostles from various professions.
  • Such a tattered group of believers.
  • Such a small group of 120 persons.
  • Such a faithful woman, Mary, the mother of Jesus.
  • Such an amazing group of men and women, walking in one accord, faithfully focused on spreading the word of God.

Like those who came before us, we either remember or quickly forget.

Like those who saw the works of the LORD, we see the LORD’S provisions or we crave what we desire more.

Like those who walked across the Red Sea, we either walk in faithfulness toward the Promise Land or wander in the wilderness of the desert.

Like those who came before us, we either believe His words & sing praises or we quickly forget His works.

Like those faithful believers gathered in the upper room after Jesus’ ascension, we either gather to pray, seeking God’s Plan or we scatter, going our own way.

Like those faithful ones, we either witness in our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, & uttermost parts or we daily choose to not share Jesus.

Yes, like those faithful Christians, We Either Are—or—We are not!
