Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

Lackadaisical—OR—Purposeful?

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

(2 Corinthians 3: 17 NASB)

Since I was up super early, this morning, I found myself reading and studying about the High Holy Days found within the Jewish tradition.  This is a time of preparation, a time of intense reflection, and a time to search one’s soul.  At the end of this time (the month-long days of preparation), the Jewish nation culminates the process with the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) that begins on September 17th.  Following this time of celebration comes Yom Kippur on September 24, the Day of Atonement (the holiest day in Judaism).  After this time of repentance, the next Holy Day begins on September 29th, a festival, the Festival of Booths, a joyous time celebrating harvest.

Then arrives Shemini Atzeret on October 6th, a day marking the end of reflection and celebration as the person begins to transition back to the day-to-day routine of life.  Finally, on October 7th at sundown comes Simchat Torah, an observance that rejoices in the first five books of the Bible (the Torah).  This time underscores how the Word of the Lord is central.

  • Ritualistic.
  • Formulaic.
  • Purposeful.
  • Prepared.
  • Expected.
  • Followed. &

Traditionally Practiced year-after-year-after-yearafter . . .

As I read the details of the High Holy Days and the preparation leading up to the observances of them, I began to ask myself:  Is the Christian lazy?

Are we truly “lazy” in our obedience?

  • Do we study, memorize, observe, follow, serve, and worship the LORD of the UNIVERSE, our HOLY FATHER in a “lackadaisical” way?

If so, if we are not purposeful, how can we become (not ritualistic) but more focused in the ‘Tenets’ of our faith.

  • Do we seek God’s face & REPENT of our sins—Daily?

“When You said, ‘Seek My face,’ my heart said to You,
‘Your face, O LORD, I shall seek.”

(Psalm 27: 8 NASB)
  • Do we seek God’s presence and repent of our sins every single day we are given to live?  &
  • Do we seek to commune in PRAYER with God?

“While I was fainting away,
I remembered the LORD,
And my prayer came to You,
Into Your holy temple.”

(Jonah 2: 7 NASB)

—OR—

Do we, like Jonah, find ourselves running away, again & again, only to remember the LORD and hurriedly whisper our requests in prayer, only when we are in despair?

  • Are we stepping into the Holy Temple of God as we should?
  • Do we seek God’s presence in REPENTANCE for our daily sins?
  • Are we seeking God’s promised, direct communication-line of PRAYER?
  • When we see those in need, do we have a spirit of CHARITY?

“And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own,
but all things were common property to them.
And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.
For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales
and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each as any had need.”

(Acts of the Apostles 4: 32-35 NASB)

REPENTANCE—PRAYER—CHARITY.

Each of these “tenants” lead one in preparation for the observance of the Highest Holy Days.  When reading and studying, truly, the question formed—Are Christians purposeful within their faith walk with the Lord Jesus Christ?—OR—Are they (the Christ-followers) more lackadaisical—in their walk of faith with their Savior?

NOW, IN TRUTH—

Ritualistically following a scripted, formulaic way of doing things each year can only cause one to become, well more “ritualistic.”

&

ALSO IN TRUTH—

Following rituals year-after-year cannot lead one into heaven because it is 100% truth, a person DOES NOT, NOR CANNOT come into SPIRITUAL BIRTH at the moment of one’s PHYSICAL BIRTH.

SALVATION IS A GIFT of ALMIGHTY GOD!

&

FINALLY, ALSO TRUE—

An individual will NEVER enter Heaven & will NEVER step into God’s presence APART from the BLOOD of JESUS!

For, Jesus Himself explains quite clearly in the apostle John’s writing:

“Jesus said to him,
‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

(John 14: 6 NASB)

Therefore, as I finish writing and studying the Bible this morning and begin my day of grading and preparing next week’s lessons to teach, I find myself looking at my computer screen, and there, along the top, I see numerous, open tabs.  Consider that for a moment.

  • Numerous tabs across the top of the computer.
  • Open tabs that can be accessed at a moment’s notice.

I wonder—

  • As a society of Christians,
  • As believers who have received the forgiveness of sins,
  • As the redeemed of Christ through the covering of sins by the blood of the Lamb,
  • Are we focused MORE upon what we hope to accomplish within our day, within our month, within our year, or even within our lifetime?
  • Are we lackadaisical in our study of God’s Word & in our Repentance & in our Prayer time & in our Charitable acts as we serve as the hands and feet of Jesus?

—OR—

  • Are we focused MORE upon the PURPOSEFUL PURSUIT of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST?  !!!

Maybe right now is the time to shut ourselves into our inner chamber of prayer, seek God’s face as He reveals the areas of our lives where we need His pure repentance.  As we do, we are afforded the opportunity to intercessory pray for those who are lost, who do not know Him as their Savior, & we are gifted with God’s presence as we are led to remember those who surround us, struggling in need.  The LORD HIMSELF will give us liberty as His Holy Spirit leads our steps through this single day we have been given to live.  “Thank You, LORD.”

“One thing I have asked from the
LORD, that I shall seek;
That I may dwell in the house of the
LORD all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD
And to meditate in His temple.
For in the day of trouble He will
conceal me in His tabernacle;
In the secret place of His tent He will

hide me;
He will life me up on a rock.
And now my head will be lifted up
above my enemies around me,
And I will offer in His tent sacrifices
with shouts of joy;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to
the LORD.”

(Psalm 27: 4-6 NASB)
