Will you Walk with Me?
Last evening, my husband and I took a walk. We had a destination in mind as we sat together on the side-porch discussing life. “I counted fourteen bales,” I said in response to our discussion about the hay that my brother had cut and baled in the field adjoining our field behind the house.
“I thought we might walk over there in a minute to see how wet the lower part is where he didn’t cut the hay,” my husband said before asking, “Will you walk with me?”
A simple question: “Will you Walk with Me?”
As we began our walk down the driveway, every step reminded me of the back (and now hip) pain I seem to carry with me. With each step, I was overly conscience of the crooked way I now seem to walk. When I attempted to straighten up and “walk right,” I felt a little more pain. That truth “pained” my mind.
We walked our steps down the lane, down our short road to the “main road,” turned left and journeyed up the hill to the adjoining property where my brother had baled the hay earlier in the day. As we stepped into the hayfield, I felt the relief of the softer grass over the harder surface of the blacktop road. Counting as we walked through the small field, my husband (the mathematician) counted fifteen, not fourteen, proving once again how I cannot count (but that’s another story for another day).
Then, after we completed the walk around the small hayfield, checking the lower side for the moisture (my husband’s intent in taking the walk), we then began our walk back down the hill on the “main road.” Step-by-step, we made our way toward home, walking, and in those steps, we spoke about the memorization of Scripture I am working toward with a beautiful redheaded girl. I attempted to quote my Scripture, resorting to the singing of the verse, and then my husband responded by quoting a verse.
“That’s not a verse, is it?” I questioned as we walked.
“Yes,” he replied, and immediately I said, “It sounds like a passage from Nehemiah 4.”
This morning, as I sat and read, I wondered—Am I walking well in life?
Am I allowing God to clear away the debris from my life as He lovingly rebuilds the broken parts of me?
A simple question: “Will you Walk with Me?” God asks His children every day.
This morning, as I was led to read, the word BOAST permeated my mind. In studying the Bible and what it says about BOASTING, I found myself drawn to the connection between the words—BOASTING—REBUILDING—WALKING—&—SPIRITUAL GROWTH.
SEE WITH ME WHAT GOD HAS REVEALED IN HIS WORD.
“For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. . . . “
(2 Chronicles 16: 9a)
“The greatest honor we can give Almighty God is to live gladly because of the knowledge of His love.” –Julian of Norwich
“So we built the wall and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. . . .
From that day on, half of my servants carried on the work while half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows and the breastplates; and the captains were behind the whole house of Judah.
Those who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens took their load with one hand doing the work and the other holding a weapon.
As for the builders, each wore his sword girded at his side as he built, while the trumpeter stood near me.
I said [the prophet Nehemiah said] to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, ‘The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.
At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.’”
(Nehemiah 4: 6 & 16-20)
Our Father dearly loves us. Just as the Son of God brought the Father great joy, the children of God are to also bring great joy to our Father. It is the truth! As we dwell within and upon the love of the Father for us, we are reminded of the desire to “walk worthy” as we live in a way that pleases & brings honor to HIM.
“Have you found honey? Eat only what you need,
That you not have it in excess and vomit it. . . .
It is not good to eat much honey,
Nor is it glory to search out one’s own glory.
Like a city that is broken into and without walls
Is a man who has no control over his spirit.”
(Proverbs 25: 16 & 27-28)
What keeps us from living in a healthy way—physically, emotionally, mentally, & spiritually?
“But HE WHO BOASTS IS TO BOAST IN THE LORD.
For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.”
(2 Corinthians 10: 17-18)
Are you walking well in life?
Am I walking well in life?
Father God, Hear our prayer.
Holy Spirit guide us and give us strength to Walk Well within Your Presence.
Lead us to clear away the habits that can limit our intimacy with Father God.
Lead us to the blessings only You can give.
Lead us to tend to our soul, to step with confidence in the way You would have us to go toward Your precious healing.
Lead us onto the path we are to walk as we take up our steps, matching step-for-step with Christ Jesus our Savior.
Lead us to do the work that needs to be done, as the prophet Nehemiah reminds us, “with one hand doing the work and the other holding a weapon” so we may fight against the enemy, the devil, who comes to steal and to kill our lives, our future, our witness, and our joy.
Lead us to “take a thoughtful walk around the city,” noting within our lives where the most damage exists.
Lead us—Holy Spirit—to allow You to rebuild the damaged and broken places within our lives.
Lead us to allow You—God to build Your wall around us that we may be protected.
Lead us to desire, to want to experience a “rebuilding.”
Help us to allow You—God to remove the debris that stands in the way.
Help us Trust YOU—ALMIGHTY GOD, who began “a good work” in us.
This is my prayer today. Maybe today, this is your prayer as well.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.
‘The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.
At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.’”
(Nehemiah 4: 19b-20)
