Learn to rest in Him
Have we ever enjoyed a holiday, a respite from work, from normal day-to-day life ONLY to need a follow-up holiday from our tiredness gained during our vacation? I have, and maybe you have, too. The LORD knows this about us, His creation, and maybe that is why His Word speaks of His perfect rest.
In the well-known psalm, David writes, reminding us where we will find the LORD’S rest.
“The LORD is my shepherd,
(The Psalms 23: 1-2a NASB)
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; . . .”
Many farmers are changing and allowing sheep to become part of their work. In our congregation at church, I can think of at least three who have added sheep to their farms. Rather than continuing as cattlemen only, they are now herdsmen (shepherds) for a variety of reasons, one being the diversity these animals bring to their farming operations. However, sheep are different from cattle. Sheep need safety; they need satisfaction; and they need sufficiency that only their shepherd can give to them.
In Jesus’ day, the people of Israel were shepherds (men who watched over their flocks), and they would have understood sheep herding. The shepherds of the ancient world led their sheep and their sheep followed because the sheep knew their voice. That may be why Jesus used that analogy when He said—
“To him the doorkeeper opens,
(The Gospel According to John 10: 3-4 NASB)
and the sheep hear his voice,
and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he puts forth all his own,
he goes ahead of them,
and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.”
- Do we know the Good Shepherd? & Do we recognize His voice when He calls us by our name?
- Do we follow the Good Shepherd, Jesus? & Do we go wherever He leads us because we know He cares for us and wants what’s best for us?
Yes, sheep need to feel the safety of their shepherd, and they also need the satisfaction that only the shepherd can bring to them. Read literature about raising sheep, and you will see that sheep lay down when their little bellies are full. The shepherd has led them to the green pastures and to the springs of water where they have taken their fill, and then these tiny creatures lay down and find sweet rest.
Jesus spoke of the difference between a good shepherd and the hired man, who does not care for his sheep, when He said—
“I am the good shepherd;
(The Gospel According to John 10: 11-15 NASB)
the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
He who is the hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep,
sees the wolf coming,
and leaves the sheep and flees,
and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.
I am the good shepherd,
and I know My own and My own know Me,
even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father;
and I lay down My life for the sheep.”
Yes, sheep need to feel the safety and satisfaction of their shepherd. Additionally, sheep need the sufficiency that only the shepherd can give them.
“The LORD is my shepherd,
(The Psalms 23: 1-3 NASB)
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.”
Christ Jesus is our sufficiency!
Read any sheep herding publication, and we will note how sheep do not like and will not drink from turbulent water. They do not like stagnant water either. Some call them finicky animals, but maybe we should see the larger truth here. We need rest. We need physical rest, mental rest, social media rest, work rest, and social obligation. That’s why we schedule holidays and respites, trying to get away from it all, but then we getaway, and return not really feeling rested as we should. We discover that getting away from our problems does not really solve any of our stressors.
The Holy Scripture tells us the rest we need most of all. We need rest of the soul.
We need to trust in Jesus and patiently wait upon Him, for in Him we find the rest we so desperately need.
Lord Jesus, help us learn to rest in You.
Jesus said—
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden,
(The Gospel According to Matthew 11: 28-30 NASB)
and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
