The Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ
It was a simple phone call, one I had promised to make. Yet, when I called, she was busy and needed to call me back, and she was faithful to keep her promise. That’s when we shared a conversation, not necessarily the one I anticipated we would engage; however, one that was more God-centered.
- Do you ever find yourself walking through your day and ask: “How did I get here?”
- Do you encounter God-moments, God-winks when you whisper: ‘Thank You, God, for this special moment’?
Yesterday, our small, intergenerational group engaged in a discussion of heaven, the marriage feast, the assurance of salvation, and our walk with Christ. This was such a rich discussion, one that I did not wish to end, but we needed to end, for we were several minutes late for the VBS meeting. Maybe we can continue this discussion next week, our small group leader voiced. Maybe, I remember thinking, but we’ll never be in this same headspace again, all of us, together in this discussion. It’s impossible (usually) to pick up just where you left off, seven days later, but maybe we hopefully will be able to do just that.
Then as we walked toward the main building on our church campus, I asked a young believer if she would like to share a coffee to discuss the Bible more and to seek answers together? Seriously, I do not know if I am the one to answer her questions, but I know the Bible holds those answers, and (as we walked together) I voiced this and said: “I am willing to dig in the Bible with you to find the answers you seek.” So we planned as we walked and then reached the door where the VBS meeting was to be held.
A half-an-hour later, after the VBS meeting, one my younger sister (the director) expertly led, I walked with a different new believer as we made our way to the parking lot and our vehicles. She had mentioned a prayer concern during our small group time of prayer, and I wanted to ask her more about this situation. We talked, a bit, and then I walked toward my vehicle and drove away from the church campus knowing I needed to make a phone call.
In the Bible, the apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, he reminded them of a truth of God that is imperative for us to remember.
“He made known to us the mystery of His will,
(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 1: 9-12 NAS)
[Paul speaks of our Creator, Jehovah God]
according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him
[Paul speaks of Jesus Christ, our Savior]
with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times,
that is, the summing up of all things in Christ,
things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him
also we have obtained an inheritance,
having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,
to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ
would be to the praise of His glory.”
There is a Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ as we walk within this lifespan the LORD has created. As we wake up, go to work, eat our meals, hug those we love, play and exercise, and work with our hands, there are a few questions we need to ask—
- Is our relationship with Christ Jesus an essential part of our everyday?
- Are we making space daily to pray, to talk with and to listen to God speak?
- Are we creating time daily to read His Word, to apply Scripture to our lives?
- Are we engaging in opportunities to access God’s grace so we might know Him better?
- If not, what might we do or what might we let go of, in order to make more space for Him?
As I drove toward home, replaying the small group discussion, the conversation with a new believer, the VBS meeting, and the second conversation shared with another new believer, I found myself preparing for the phone call I needed to make.
Without going into specific details about that call that came later, an hour after I arrived home, I need to pause here and proclaim: Our purpose in life reflects God’s purpose for our lives. In knowing God better, we will know God better. There is a Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ.
Our lives are all about His glory.
“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth,
(The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 1: 13-14 NAS)
the gospel of your salvation—having also believed,
you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
who is given as a pledge of our inheritance,
with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession,
to the praise of His glory.”
Our lives are beautifully interwoven with—
- Those who came before us & with
- Those who will come after us & with
- Those who God surrounds us with right now.
Because in God, we are never alone!
He gives us a community of those who believe to equip us and to encourage us.
Our lives are all about His glory.
There is a Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ.
