Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

Positioning & How can we know that we are in the right place?

Yesterday, I was walking.  I headed down the driveway, turned a slight left, walked the narrow road we call ‘our road.’  Then after what seemed like a thousand small, shuffle steps, I reached the end of our short road, where I did a small U-turn and began the trek back toward our driveway.  Before I turned right into our driveway to begin the slight walk uphill to our home, I encountered one of my young neighbors.

“Hi.  How are you?”

You know, the standard greeting.  She was standing there, waiting to visit with her friend, another young neighbor of ours.  Both of these girls are in high school; both have future plans; & both are excited for a LONG summer break.

“I’m fine,” she replied (another standard reply).

“What grade will you be in next year?” I asked.

“I’m still homeschooled, you know,” she replied.

Yes, I remembered and I even recalled ‘why’ but my purpose in asking her my question was not based upon ‘why’ or ‘where’ she attended school but rather ‘WHAT’ she hoped to do once her high school years were complete.  You see, I wanted to see how she planned to ‘Position’ herself as a young adult.

The apostle Paul had something to say about this topic within his letter written to the early Christians living at Philippi.  The LORD led Paul to write—

“Brethren,
I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet;
but one thing I do:  forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Philippians 3: 13-14 NASB)

Can I pause here to make two statements?

  1. I love living away from the city, out in the country, where cows graze, fields are what we see more than buildings, and where life just seems more relaxed.  Each day, I love coming home.
  2. Secondly, I love our driveway.  Years ago (2006), when my new brother-like builder walked with me across the property where we (meaning HE) would build our home, I recall the way he looked at me and said, “Nancy, don’t you want to build your house over there,” pointing toward our small country road, “where you’ll have a shorter driveway and be closer to the road?”  Now, don’t get me wrong, I love saving money when saving is important, but even more important than money is the ‘positioning’ that comes with knowing we are in the right place.

This is the topic the LORD has placed on my heart this morning—Positioning & How can we know that we are in the right place?

The LORD began a good work in us the day he placed us into our mother’s womb, and since the moment God conceived the idea that we would exist, He has desired that we would be ‘positioned’ just exactly where we could grow in our love, faith, and hope in Him.  For some, this ‘positioning’ comes early in life, while for others, this ‘positioning’ takes years and years to reach.

Now, let’s pause to clarify that ‘position’ is not a stationary place.  Sure, there is a STARTING PLACE and there is an ENDING ETERNAL PLACE, but the in-between ‘position’ relies completely on our faithfulness to grow in Christ.  We who attend church like to say “sanctification,” but what that really means is to be ‘positioned’ in the place God plans for us to be at this very moment in our lives:

  • So that we can grow deeper in love with Him
  • So that we can serve Him more, &
  • So that we can share His Gospel message with others in order for His Kingdom to grow.

You see, our ‘position’ is not really at all about US but is all about HIM—the LORD JESUS CHRIST!

This is what Paul meant when he wrote—

“forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Philippians 3: 13b-14 NASB)

God gives each person born natural-born talents, but followers of Christ are GIFTED with something special:  Spiritual Gifts.  Only those who have received the Holy Spirit of God can possess these gifts, so those individuals walking across the face of the earth, who have rejected Christ, do not have God’s Holy Spirit placed inside them as a pledge of faith, nor do they have Spiritual Gifts.

For Christians, it’s a Win-Win.

BUT

For Unbelievers, it’s a Loss-Loss.

There is no other way to explain it;  we either have Christ dwelling within us, equipping us, gifting us, and ‘positioning’ us where we can serve Him—OR WE DON’T.

You see, Christians never retire; it’s not biblical.  Sure, we may step away from our day-to-day job, but we never retire from our Christian, Spiritual Service to our Lord.  It’s just unfathomable.  God does not save us from ourselves to allow us to revert back to become focused again upon ourselves.  That would just be foolish, and our LORD is certainly NEVER foolish but ONLY WISE!

We may be closer to the end of our lives than to the beginning, or maybe, you are like me and like to say, “I am in the middle of my life, because at fifty-seven, I still have a few years of service left in me before I reach my hopeful age of 103.  It’s not that I don’t want to go to heaven.  I do!  I just want to work as long as I can, while I can, and as the LORD allows.

The LORD determined our days way-back-when He placed us in our mother’s womb, and then HE counted out our days.  The Bible records this truth, so believe it.

We are not given the privilege of knowing when our last day will come, but we are given the opportunity to be ‘positioned’ just exactly where we know God would have us to be Placed, doing exactly what HE has led us to do. We can never return to the womb, and we have been headed toward the tomb since the day God created us, but for the Christian Believer, we are alive in Christ, meaning: We have been made alive in Him, in Jesus Christ. So, our spirit will never truly die!

Thus, some ask:  How can we know the what & the where?

Well, the answer is really quite easy.

  • Study God’s Word Every Single Day.
  • Walk With God Every Single Day.
  • Repent of the Sins God Brings to Our Mind Every Single Day.
  • Pray & Pray & Pray & Pray & Pray & . . . Every Single Day.
  • See Where God is Already at Work & Join Him There Every Single Day.

If we allow ourselves to serve God Every Single Day, then we cannot help but be ‘positioned’ exactly where God would have us be & doing exactly what God would have us do.

“forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Pretty Simple & Quite Easy—right?!!!

The apostle Peter wrote about this topic of working for the Lord, of being ‘positioned’ within his letters the LORD led him to write.  The Bible records this truth, so believe it.

Please pause to read with me—

“As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Whoever speaks,
is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God;
whoever serves
is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies;
so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.  Amen.”

(The First Letter of Peter 4: 10-11 NASB)
