God’s Promises Given to Us from GOD
“Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying,
(The Book of Joshua 1: 1-2 NASB)
“Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel.”
When I was a child, there was an activity that I participated in on a regular basis: playing with all abandon. A choice and a privilege in our home. As I think back upon the many ways we played, several images jog through my mind.
- Playing with my brother in the sandbox.
- Racing across the barnyard on our brand-new bicycles our parents gifted us with one sunny day.
- Hanging upside down on the end pole of the close-line.
- Pretending to be a cowboy, while playing with my brother on the rooftops of the hog houses.
- Climbing into the barn-loft to peer out the large window where dad’s hired hands fed the many bales of hay.
On & On & On, days of play come jogging readily into my mind of my days of childhood on our Indiana farm. Nonetheless, one other ‘school’ activity also comes to mind: running backwards without falling down on the gym floor. Mr. Ahler was the PE teacher, one who was always prepared with organized activities of play: parachute running, trampoline gymnastics, whiffle ball, and races of speed across the gym floor, both forward and backward. I was a kid who played hard (yes, maybe you are not surprised) & a kid who always played to win (yes, maybe you are not surprised). Therefore, Mr. Ahler would have us line up on the gym floor line with the direction to race to the other end, to touch the line on the floor, and then to run backward to the start line. The first one back was the WINNER!
Well, I wanted with all my might to be first, back to the start line, to be the WINNER!
As I think back, oftentimes I would arrive to the end line in the gym first and then be headed back toward the start-line, running backwards, but then stumble and fall down on my backside. (Maybe this is partly the reason my lower back is bad today.) Have you ever attempted to race, to run backward and not look back over your shoulder in the direction which you are running? Well, let me tell you:
- It’s nearly impossible to run in a straight line—backwards—and keep your eyes focused forward in the direction in which you have come. Running in this explained fashion, without looking toward the way in which you are running is sure to cause you to fall straight down, landing hard on your buttocks.
- It is also nearly impossible to run—backwards—without glancing over your shoulder as you go, without peering in the way you are running, even though the front of your body points in the opposite direction. As you race, looking back overtop your shoulder, it is probable that your legs will become tangled, causing you to fall straight down, landing hard on your buttocks. Yes, truly, racing in a forward-facing motion makes far more sense than racing while running backward.
Now racing backwards as a child did not always cause me to fall down hard on the gym floor, but often this is exactly what happened because our bodies were designed by our Creator God to run forward in the way we are to go. We are designed to look with our eyes in the direction we are going.
Did we catch the spiritual truth God seems to be revealing here?
God charged Joshua, His servant leader to “now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, . . .” After Moses has died & after Joshua has been made leader, God did not charge this new leader of the children of Israel to arise and go backward to Egypt, to the land of captivity from which they had come. NO! Almighty God charged Joshua to get up, he and all the multitude of people, and to go—forward walking—toward the next river they needed to cross: the Jordan River. As they did obey God, then we see one of the promises of God: the promise of the Promise Land that God was giving freely to them. Promise #1—Only God can give His people HOPE!
Hum!
All they had to do was ARISE, to GO in the DIRECTION GOD LED THEM TO GO & to ACCEPT the LAND HE WAS GIVING FREELY GIVING TO THEM TO INHABIT.
- God’s Promises do not depend upon you and me.
- God’s Promises Depend Only Upon GOD!
- God’s Promises can be ours when we trust & obey Him!
This TRUTH is shared with us over & over throughout the entirety of the Bible. We are reminded through many historical narratives, through the words of God’s prophets, through the actions of Jesus’ disciples, and through the very words of Jesus Christ our Savior—how we only need to walk daily with God, obediently going in the way He would have us to go, listening to His Holy Spirit as He leads us to the eternity He has prepared for us. Pretty Simple, RIGHT?!
And get this, in the very next verses, God gives Joshua and the children of Israel four additional promises only God in all His power is able to extol.
“Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses.
(The Book of Joshua 1: 3-5 NASB)
From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory.
[Promise #2—the entire land of thousands of acres to claim!]
No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life.
[Promise #3—their enemy will not win for the LORD has already won the battle!]
Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you;
[Promise #4—God never leaves His people!]
I will not fail you or forsake you.
[Promise #5—Almighty, Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent God
will not fail to do what He has promised!]”
Yes, when I was a child, I participated on a regular basis the action of playing with all abandon, fully knowing that my dad would keep me safe & he would help me up whenever I stumbled and fell down hard. My part—Go with my eyes facing forward.
Once we belong to God, we are not to be looking back, focused on the things behind us but on the prize we are striving toward. The apostle Paul spoke of this in his letter to the believers living in Philippi.
“Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do:
(The Letter of Paul to the Philippians 3: 13-14 NASB)
forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
We who Believe, who have Received Christ Jesus as our Savior are striving toward the PROMISE of GOD: ETERNITY with HIM.
Nevertheless, we are not perfect this side of glory, and sometimes, we run, not as we should, but backwards. At times, we stumble and fall down hard, but Praise God, He has given us another PROMISE for when we do. It is with this I end—Promise #6—
“The steps of a man are established by the LORD,
(The Psalms 37: 23-24 NASB)
And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.”
