“Days Like Hand Widths”
A. W. Tozer wrote: “The Christian is a holy rebel loose in the world with access to the throne of God.”
A Rebel.
Holy because of God.
Direct Access to God.
Loose in the world.
God’s Throne Room.
The Christian should never, ever sense he is alone because he is never, not ever, alone—Never Separated from God.
The passage of time becomes so real as time passes. Funny how God designed that. Maybe God considered our feebleness of mind and determined that there would be no way for His creation to understand the passage of time. Even if He revealed the brevity of our time—up front—say when we were crawling through our infancy OR skipping through our childhood OR galloping through our teen years OR sashaying through our young adult years OR plummeting through our 30s and 40s OR gingerly stepping through our 50s & 60s OR even creeping through our elderly years.
God Knew!
Yes, that’s right. For sure, God knew we would not be able to handle the “seeing” of all our days, our years, at once, so he gave to us the beautiful day—ONE-AT-A-TIME!
Thank You, God.
“LORD, let me know my end,
(Psalm 39: 4-7 NASB)
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how transient I am.
“Behold, You have made my days like hand widths,
And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Certainly all mankind standing is a mere breath. Selah.
“Certainly every person walks around as a fleeting shadow;
They certainly make an uproar for nothing;
He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My hope is in You.”
If you know me, then you may know how I loved to toss a coin during my twenties. In fact, oftentimes, a quarter rested snug inside my right-side pocket, ready for a coin toss, a flip into the air, to determine what decision I should make.
Go out to eat OR Stay home to eat. Flip the Coin.
Take a vacation here to this location OR Take a holiday there. Toss the Coin.
Buy that vehicle OR Keep looking for another new-to-me car. Reach down into my pocket, place the quarter on the tip of my thumb, flinging it high into the air, catching it as the quarter falls, and slap the quarter down onto my left arm. DECISION MADE!
If our life were a coin toss, would we have accepted Christ Jesus as Savior.
Christians—who believe, who accept Jesus as Savior, who trust God, who are saved, & who have received the salvation of God—have been given something quite beautiful: We never lose.
“Heads, we win.”
“Tails, we win.”
“If it lands on its side, we still win!”
As Christians, we do more than believe in God. We accept His will.
If it’s the Lord’s will to live, then we live.
If it is God’s will to die, then we will die, but either way, Christians are never defeated.
WHY?
It depends upon our relationship with Jesus.
Totally, it resonates with the truth that whether we live here on earth or die and walk into our eternal home—We have Christ & We Win!
So, while we live within this “breath” of time we are given to live, we should not fret about our years, about our time lived, or even about our time remaining. David reminds us so eloquently within his 39th Psalm that we have nothing to fear, nothing to fret, nothing to dread.
Read with me, again, the beauty of God’s truth.
“LORD, let me know my end,
(Psalm 39: 4-5 NASB)
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how transient I am.
“Behold, You have made my days like hand widths,
And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Certainly all mankind standing is a mere breath. Selah.”
Let us not try to keep areas of our life away, separated from God. He sees it all anyway.
- God hears our words.
- God knows our fears.
- God senses our mumbled prayers in the darkest moments.
- God sees all that we do or do not.
- God knows every part of us; He created us.
- Once we make the decision to give our heart to Him, to accept all that Jesus did upon the cross of Calvary, then God fills us with Himself, His Holy Spirit, &
- We only need to allow Him to walk us through this brief life.
It’s pretty simple. Whether it’s heads, we win OR whether it’s tails, we win, not because life is a game of chance but because God Is God Is God Is God Is God . . . !
God invites us to follow Him & to allow Him to work in our midst.
“Certainly every person walks around as a fleeting shadow;
(Psalm 39: 6-7 NASB)
They certainly make an uproar for nothing;
He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My hope is in You.”
Jesus came to provide salvation.
Jesus came as the promised Messiah.
Jesus came to offer us abundant life.
Let us—this day—Walk through this day as a “holy rebel.”
Let us—today—Live Large.
Let us—During the breadth of this single day—Proclaim Jesus to those we encounter.
Let us—Christians who have been sealed by the Holy Spirit of God—access the throne room of God as we quietly crawl, or prayerfully skip, or gallop or sashay or plummet or gingerly step or even creep through this one day we have been given.
God Knows Us!
He Knows Our Beginning & Our Ending & All the In-Between!
Our HOPE is only in HIM!
