Living Transformed Until We Arrive Safely Home
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to himself.”
(Philippians 3: 20-21 NASB)
We live in a place, in a time, in a generation when people seek refuge in a variety of places: in their hobbies, in their careers, in their identify, in their relationships, in their life goals, but God reminds us how there is only one place where we can come home. Yes, that is correct. We are, as the Apostle Paul said, in a “body of our lowly condition,” and we are in need of “His glorious body.”
We live out our citizenship wherever we go, wherever we call home, even while we are alive here on earth. As a believer, as God’s child, we walk across this earth, going from place to place, but we are only temporary citizens here, only so-journeying here, and only living here for a moment. Yes! We would be better off if we would remember that truth so that we won’t get caught up in what this world has to offer us. Instead, we need to understand as we walk through the days God gives us to live that we are broken people, saved by the grace of God, temporarily left here for ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, or even seventy years for one solitary reason—to help others see God as we walk with Jesus.
Many seek safety, seek refuge in other places during war, during times of fear, and during times of tyranny. One gains citizenship in a variety of ways: after taking a national exam of citizenship, after marriage to a national from another country, or after birth into a place. Then as a citizen of that country, we represent the place where we live, where we breathe, and where we “hang our hat” (so to speak). We request a passport from our home country so that we can visit other places, but also so that we have a documented proof, a way to return home.
Step with me for a moment to a line, one that winds throughout an overly large room located in an international airport. As we stand in line, attempting to enter the place we hope to visit, all kinds of thoughts enter our heads: Will the border guard let me pass? What will I do if he says, “No”? Does anyone ever NOT pass through? Yes, all sorts of fears rage through our being as we slowly snake our way through the long line, awaiting our turn, rehearsing the answers to the questions in our head.
Question #1—Why are you here?
Question #2—How long will you stay?
Question #3—Have you purchased your ticket to return home?
We cannot visit another continent, another country, another place without a plan to return home. That is also true about our life here as a human, as a person. We will not live forever! It’s just not possible. We are only passing through! Then another generation will take over, and they too, will pass through the time they call—My Life.
- Where will we go when this life is over?
- Where will we find refuge?
- What will happen when we finally close our eyes in death?
Questions every single person struggles to answer.
Whenever a person lives & Wherever a person finds himself living during life, there is really only one place, one refuge, one safety, one strength, one person—JESUS! He is the ONLY ONE who has the power to see us safely through to the other side, to our eternal resting place.
Dual Citizenship.
- Heaven is our eternal HOME—if we have believed & if we have received God’s offer of Salvation.
But
- Heaven is not our eternal HOME—if we choose not to believe & if we choose to not receive God’s offer of Salvation.
It is the Unpardonable Sin—to reject God!
There will never be safe passage into the presence of God, if we reject the salvation of God found only through Jesus, the Son of God!
There is no other way!
Whether we have been born in Asia, in Europe, in America, in any place, we will only live in that place, that land, that territory for a span of a few years before our life will be through (finished), and then we will face our eternity.
Where we will go after our earthly life is over remains totally left to each one of us!
Our forefathers believed there was a God.
Our forefathers saw how all of God’s teachings were given to us, to guide our path, and to direct our daily steps.
They believed—The Holy Word of God!
We read and we are reminded of this truth as we read our copy of God’s Word.
We trust this truth.
Let us not forget that our “declaration of independence” we proclaim is our “DEPENDANCE upon ALMIGHTY GOD”!
YES, LET US NOT FORGET—EVER!
One of the great ministers of early America Jonathan Edwards, once penned these words:
“They, who have God for their God, are safe . . .
they have his faithful promise to be their refuge.”
As we walk through this day God has allotted us to live, let us walk as a duo-citizen, faithful to place we call “home” and with our HOPE and our EYES firmly focused upon our SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST.
Then as we walk through this day, walk on purpose, in God’s purpose, sharing Jesus with others as the Holy Spirit leads, asking those we meet the questions:
Question #1—Why are you here?
Question #2—How long will you stay?
Question #3—Have you accepted Jesus who purchased your ticket to go home?
May we never forget how we are temporarily here—then we’ll go home!

who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to himself.”
