A walk through life toward eternity

Finding Our JOY & Avoiding Everything Else

“What do you enjoy doing—the most?”
&
“What do you enjoy doing—the least?”

Those were the two questions I posed to my young students.   They looked at me, wheels already turning in their minds, and eager to share.  My next direction released them to turn to a person sitting behind them, introduce themselves, and share their answers to my two questions.
“Teacher, do we need to write down their answers,” Brett asked.  “Yes,” I replied, “in your mind. Really listen and remember what your peer says.”
Enjoyment.  Normally, we place “doing” or “not doing” next to the word “enjoy” whenever we consider this particular word.

We may ENJOY—MOST—

  • Driving.
  • Reading our Bible.
  • Attending Sporting Events.
  • Going to Church.
  • Teaching.
  • Writing.
  • Visiting Your Daughters.
  • Reading.
  • Being a Navy wife.
  • Creating Relationships.

Those were the answers I gave them as I posed the next question:  What do you think Ms. New enjoys—LEAST?

We may ENJOY—LEAST—

Silence. There were not any answers from the students when they were asked the question:  What do you think Ms. New enjoys—LEAST?
Most assuredly, there are many life events we enjoy.

Doing/Seeing/Participating (In)

We can quickly name out what we Enjoy Most.  Others can name those as well because they hear and see us Doing Those Things.
We have a list of things we really don’t enjoy doing (probably a long list), but we can live in a way that others cannot name out what we Enjoy—Least.
Yes.  Truly.

What we Enjoy—MOST—is so easy to answer because we have God’s Word, given to us, inspired by God, to help us through our every day, our every week, our every situation, our every event, our Everything that Ever Comes Our Way.
We have God Who holds His pleasures—within His hands.
We have God Who Brings us pleasure—just when we choose to enter His presence.
We have God Who will make known to us the way we should go—our life path—When We Choose to Walk Beside Him.
Inspired by God, David wrote these words in a psalm of praise—

“You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”

(Psalm 16:11)
  • We are going somewhere.
  • We are planning a future event (if even in our mind).
  • We are striving to avoid certain life pitfalls.
  • We are hoping this day, this moment, this year, and this life will bring us happiness.
  • We search for joy, for happiness, for fun, for anything we can Do/See/Attend…Just so we are not filled with all the things we wish to avoid, those things we Enjoy—Least.
  • We Strive & Strive & Strive & Strive—Attempting to avoid those negative things, when in reality, many of our least favorite things must be tolerated and cannot be avoided.

God inspired His child David to remind us that WITH GOD—

There is JOY in walking in God’s will, on God’s path for our lives.
There is JOY in remaining within God’s presence during our days.
There is JOY in being in God’s presence as He holds pleasures in His right hand…forever.

God’s Path—God’s Presence—God’s Right Hand.

There is where we find JOY—–MOST!!!!
And when we do seek God to walk His path, to stay within His presence, then we see how we can bring joy to our Father.
“For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.”
(Psalm 149:4)

Let us not ever be satisfied with  mediocrity .
Let us have fullness of joy!!!
Let us bring delight to our Father by obediently walking within His will, today, seeing His presence, and enjoying all the Godly pleasures He has held for us.

What Should We Enjoy—Least?
Running Away from God.
What should We Enjoy—Most?
Running Toward God.

God’s Path—God’s Presence—God’s Right Hand.
