Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

Are we carrying the Sword of the Spirit with us?

Currently, the world is living in “the last day,” and while we do not know for how many days, years, decades, centuries, or even millenniums this time period will last, we know the truth.  The “day of the Lord” will arrive suddenly, just as a thief comes into one’s home.

  • The Word of God speaks this truth.
  • Yes, the Bible clearly states God’s truth.
  • Are we wielding the Lord’s Sword of the Spirit?

Since we know the truth of God—Why are we not proclaiming it so?  Why are we not sharing this truth in our workplaces, in our fitness gyms, during our family celebrations whenever the ones we love are close by, or when we attend the local ballgames.  Why are we silent?  Do we not care about others’ eternity?  Why are we afraid to open our mouths and speak Jesus?  Shouldn’t we grab our car keys, put on our walking shoes, and do as the Bible tells us to do?

“But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
for you are all sons of light and sons of day.
We are not of night nor of darkness;
so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.
But since we are of the day, let us be sober,

having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.
For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.”

(The 1st Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians 5: 4-10 NASB)

Whenever we walk outside our homes, we enter our mission field, and our task is clear.

  • We must expose the work of the darkness.
  • We must always speak the truth of God.
  • We must take refuge in the Lord.
  • We must spread salt and the light of Jesus throughout our world.
  • We must love others harder, and we must proclaim the gospel of Jesus to anyone who will listen.
  • We must trust God because He is trustworthy.  He is sovereign.  He is actively moving, & His Son Jesus is surely coming again someday soon.

The enemy has a plot; he wishes to stop us, to destroy us, to kill our witness, and demolish our testimony of the One who saved our souls.  So, as the servant of God, Nehemiah proclaimed, we must use the Sword of the Spirit to fight our enemy.  To do so, it might mean that we need to carry the Sword of the Spirit with us.  Listen to Nehemiah and what he wrote about the way to stay strong.

“Then I sent a message to him [to the enemy] saying,
“Such things as you are saying have not been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.”
For all of them were trying to frighten us, thinking,
“They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.”
But now, O God, strengthen my hands.”

(The Book of Nehemiah 6: 8-9 NASB)
  • May we allow the Bible to be our firm foundation.
  • May we let it be our guiding staff.
  • May we pick up our Sword of the Spirit because it cuts away sin as it proclaims truth.

The late Reverend Billy Graham wrote—“Sin will keep you from God’s Word—or God’s Word will keep you from sin!”

The late once-atheist-but-now-saved—C. S. Lewis wrote—“I believe in Christianity as I believe in that the sun has risen:  not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

  • The Word of God speaks this truth.
  • Yes, the Bible clearly states God’s truth.

So, if we know, why are we not proclaiming it so?  &

Are we carrying the Sword of the Spirit with us—everywhere we go?
