Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

Ladies:  What We are to Be

  • How important is a green roof?
  • How important is the color of one’s roof when thinking about the interior of one’s heart?
  • Does the color of one’s roof and exterior siding really matter to the watching world?
  • How much value do we place into our earthly home, you know the one where we live?
  • Should we value the outside of our house MORE than the interior of our heart?
  • Would you rather be adamantly ungodly, living as the world preaches—OR—
  • Would you rather be known as a godly woman, rightly following the Word of God?

Today is Monday, and this is an important day at the house of the LORD, for on this day, two groups will gather, will meet, and we (the watching world) can learn so much from these groups of grey-haired ones.

At our church, today the Methuselah Men will meet early for breakfast, prayer, and then for a time to discuss community carpentry projects that may need their attention.  Then a little later in the morning, around 10am, the Titus2 Women will meet for card writing, prayer, and then for a time of sewing.  Today, they are working on patriotic quilts to gift the veterans in our church.

The Word of God divides these two genders into two separate categories, clearly speaking about the duties of both the older men and women.  Today, let us look first at the ladies.

“Older women likewise are
to be reverent in their behavior,
not malicious gossips
nor enslaved to much wine,
teaching what is good,
so that they may encourage the young women
to love their husbands,
to love their children,
to be sensible,
pure,
workers at home,
kind,
being subject to their own husbands,
so that the word of God will not be dishonored.”

(The Letter of Paul to Titus 2: 3-5 NASB)

Everything flows out from who we are inside because we cannot fake it—when we are at home.  Therefore, let us give our children, our family, and our husbands the gift of walking personally with Jesus Christ.

In three brief verses, the apostle Paul was led by the Holy Spirit of God to write these words to Titus, a person of faith.  Let us step through the list of what the Lord has told us Ladies:  What We are to Be.

Older women of God, the Titus2 Women, are called to:

  • Be encouragers to younger women.
  • Be faithful to their husband in both happy and difficult times.
  • Be subject to their husband, allowing him to retain the godly position the Lord has placed him in the family.
  • Be in love with and to respect your husband.
  • Be busy promoting virtuous living.
  • Be kind &
  • Be gentle.
  • Be busy at home but do not be a busybody, as in do not be a gossip.
  • Be wise as you manage your home and children.
  • Be reverent in your behavior.
  • Be purveyors (providers and a source) of godly works.
  • Be filled with integrity and live life with dignity.
  • Be temperate in your habits &
  • Be self-controlled (a Fruit of the Holy Spirit)
  • Be participants in that which is good & definitely avoid all that is evil.
  • Be pure & most definitely seek the Lord.

As a woman, a lady, a wife, and as one who is gaining more grey hairs as the calendar marks time, I read this Scripture, and know this passage speaks directly to me.  Maybe you too are like me.  However, maybe you are a young twenty-something lady.  May you look to these Titus2 Women for encouragement, direction, and example.

In closing, maybe you have come to this place and scratch your head, wondering what a roof color, an exterior siding color, and a ‘look’ of a home has to do with the Bible and its teachings.  Well, I am glad you are here reading, wondering, and seeking to know.

We must replace our roof this fall, and we have a decision to make:  Stay the same as we chose almost twenty years ago (Green roof, tan siding, & green shutters) OR Change everything as we step into our future (Black roof, slate siding, and use no shutters).  My husband and I discussed our plans, he spoke to the chosen roofer, and we were set.  Then I drove by a new home that was being constructed, one that sported a ‘new’ look, a more-modern outside design, and I voiced the possibility of changing our decision.  That simple drive-by and conversation caused us to travel to Lowes, to spend an evening looking at our options, and to leaving undecided.  That was Saturday evening, and then came Sunday and the opportunity to worship.  As I sat in the sanctuary, listening to the pastor speak about Stephen, the first deacon, and his walk with the Lord, even during his execution, the Holy Spirit placed upon my heart this truth:  The outside colors of my earthly home do not really matter.  What’s inside my inward house, my soul, the dwelling place of the LORD, my GOD—that is what matters most.  We need to be good stewards of the income the LORD has blessed us to earn, not using the funds we could spend on a ‘new’ house but using the funds to reach the lost and spread the gospel.

Now, I do not believe in happenstance.  For sure, as Sunday morphed into Monday, and I found myself reading the second chapter of Titus, I knew for sure:  The LORD had led me here, to this passage, on purpose.  While my husband and I are not yet part of the Methuselah Men or the Titus2 Women, at fifty-eight, we are much closer than we once were, for we are no longer part of the youth group or the twenty-something groups.  We are to walk within this season of life as we should.  Therefore, seasoned men & women, may we walk in our calling that which God has placed us into, and may we walk worthy of our Savior.

“Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, . . . so that they may encourage the young women . . . so that the word of God will not be dishonored.”
