Seek to Live—Right
The wedding was long-lasting that day in the town, as this was day three. Maybe that was the norm back then. Many were in attendance: the bride and groom (of course), their parents (most assuredly), the headwaiter and the servants of the master of the household. Mary (the mother of Jesus) was present, and so were the disciples of Jesus, & the Lord Jesus Himself–He was there too.
If we know the narratives found in the Bible, then we also know that which we read in chapter two, the day Jesus made the water into wine. We may even recall how this was Jesus’ first miracle and how His earthly ministry began from this day forward.
Though, let us place our focus on the words of Mary and the actions of the household servants.
On day three, there was no wine, and Mary took it upon herself to inform Jesus.
“And Jesus said to her,
(The Gospel According to John 2: 4-5 NASB)
“Woman, what does that have to do with us?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants,
“Whatever He says to you, do it.”
In our daily work—Pay attention to God.
- No matter how far our work takes us, EVEN THERE, GOD’S HAND guides us.
- Despite what the LORD leads us to say or do, EVEN THERE, HIS SPIRIT transforms us.
In our daily walk—Ask God to know our anxious thoughts, for we know how those who belong to God, those who have received His salvation & those who call Him Lord are to Seek to Live our Christian life—Righteously—as God intended.
- Right Thinking.
- Right Speaking.
- Right Praying.
- Right Actions.
We are to Seek to Live—Righteously—as the peace of God guards our hearts and our minds in Jesus.
On that third day of the wedding when Jesus’ mother knew the master of the house needed more wine, Mary trusted her Lord Jesus to provide for the need.
Next, let us notice the rest of the narrative and the actions of the household servants.
“Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification,
(The Gospel According to John 2: 6-9a NASB)
containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
Jesus said to them,
“Fill the waterpots with water.”
So they filled them up to the brim.
And He said to them,
“Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
So they took it to him.
When the head waiter tasted the water which had become wine,
and did not know where it came from
(but the servants who had drawn the water knew), . . .”
Consider the significance of the succession of these verses—
- The wine was completely gone.
- The wedding was not yet finished.
- The six waterpots were sitting there—empty.
- Jesus spoke, directing the household servants, telling them exactly what action to take.
- The servants obeyed His voice, took the six waterpots and filled them to the tip-top with water.
- The waterpots were filled with between “twenty or thirty gallons each.”
- Jesus spoke again, telling the servants to draw out some water and take it (the water) to the headwaiter.
- The servants obeyed a second time, knowing that what they were carrying was simply the plain water that they had previously placed into the six waterpots.
- They carried the water to the headwaiter & he drank from the cup which they offered to him.
- The headwaiter did not stop to consider that the cup was filled with just plain water.
- The headwaiter did not throw down the cup of water and demand for the servants to leave.
- The headwaiter simply drank from the cup, & he—
“tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from
(but the servants who had drawn the water knew), . . .”
The servants of God knew from Whom they had received the water changed to wine.
Today, the servants of God know from Whom salvation comes, the Living Water of Jesus.
- It took great faith for Jesus’ mother to say, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
- It took great faith for the servants of the household to do as the Lord Jesus commanded, when they were filling the six waterpots with water.
- It took great faith for those same servants to draw out a cupful of water and carry it to the headwaiter to drink, when the servants knew that what they carried in their cup was—simply water.
- It took great faith for the headwaiter to take the offered cup of water, carried to him by the household servants, & to tip back, to drink freely from the cup.
We must be consumed with zeal for the Lord.
- We must do whatever Jesus tells us to do.
- We must obey & trust in the leadership of His Holy Spirit.
- We must carry the living water of God to those who are thirsty, to those who are lost.
- We must obey our Lord Jesus Christ completely, for we do not know who will take the offered cup and drink freely—receiving the gift of God’s eternal salvation.
Christians are to Seek to Live—Right.
In our daily work—Let us pay attention to God.
- No matter how far our work takes us, EVEN THERE, GOD’S HAND guides us.
- Despite what the LORD commands us to say or do, EVEN THERE, HIS SPIRIT transforms us.
Ask God to know our anxious thoughts—as the peace of God guards our hearts and our minds in Jesus—for we are to testify, to witness to those in need of the Lord’s salvation
- May we Seek to Live—serving our Lord—as God intended.
- May we think ‘right’ thoughts & May we speak ‘right’ words & May we pray ‘right’ prayers & May we serve our Lord, completely obeying Him, doing His ‘right’ actions He commands us to do.
Then, as we do, we will see the prophecy fulfilled just as Habakkuk, the prophet of God foretold:
“For the earth will be filled
(The Book of Habakkuk 2: 14 NASB)
With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD,
As the waters cover the sea.”
