Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

Hey, Shine that Light over Here

One day not so long ago, I was driving.  This “driving” seems to be quite common for me, and so as I was “driving,” I passed the time listening to K-Love, praising my Lord.  Then I began to notice the makes and models of the vehicles I was passing (and of the ones passing me).

Ford. Chevy. Toyota. Hyundai, Kia, Dodge, Chrysler, Nissan, Volkswagen, Volvo, GMC, & Pontiac—These are just a few of the brands (the makes) someone might choose to own.  I began to consider how many years I have been driving since I purchased my first vehicle and how many vehicles I have owned during that time.

  • For my husband—He has owned seven.
  • For me—I have owned fifteen.

In 1984, my dad helped me select and borrow the money for my first vehicle:  a Ford Maverick, and as stated above, I now drive my fifteenth vehicle:  a Subaru Outback.

When I tell my students how my dad handed me the “coupon” book and said, “Now, go pay for it,” that $1500 seemed to be a mountain of debt I would never climb out of when I was seventeen.  However, I paid for that vehicle, and one-by-one, paying for vehicles became one of my favorite life-adventures, for when I was paying for a new-to-me vehicle, that meant I was also driving a new-to-me vehicle.

I am intrigued with the variety of vehicles out on the road.  Thus, on a day not so long ago, a day I was driving to work and noticing the variety of trucks and cars surrounding me on the highway, I came up behind a truck carrying an overly large, utility flashlight.  Needless to say, I could not notice the truck for seeing the bright-yellow BIG flashlight strapped onto a platform on the back of the truck.

Yes, this flashlight outshined the vehicle, to say the least.

Then I began to wonder—

“What would a person need with a flashlight so large?”

&

“How would a person ever hold up or use a flashlight so BIG?

These questions immediately made me do some counting in my head, as I questioned:

  • How many years have I been a Christian in relation to How many years have I been a driver?
  • How many lives have I led to the Lord in relation to How many different vehicles have I owned?

The truth found in the answers was sobering.

Jesus never rode in or drove a vehicle as we do, but before His crucifixion, Jesus spoke to crowds that followed Him from place to place, reminding them of His TRUTH—

  • CHILD OF GOD—YOU ARE THE VEHICLE THAT NOW HOUSES THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD INSIDE YOUR BEING.
  • BELIEVER—YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE THAT MUST CARRY THE LIGHT INTO THE WORLD.

Listen to the words Jesus Christ, the Savior spoke.

“And Jesus cried out and said,
“He who believes in Me,
does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me.
He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me.
I have come as Light into the world,
so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.”

(The Gospel of John 12: 44-46 NASB)

In an earlier account in the Bible, on a day when Jesus encountered an angry mob intent on stoning a woman caught in the act of adultery, He spoke of this same TRUTH—

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying,
I am the Light of the world;
he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness,
but will have the Light of life.”

(The Gospel of John 8: 12 NASB)

Just as the image of the truck carrying this overly large, bright-yellow, utility light, one so BIG that a platform was attached to the back of the bumper, our heavenly Father sent His Holy Spirit to guide us, lead us, and help us as we carry His Light to others.

  • We who believe in JESUS are the vehicle to carry His Light into the world.
  • We who have been saved through JESUS are to carry His Light to our family, friends, and neighbors.
  • We who have been redeemed by JESUS are to carry His Light everywhere we go.
  • We who know JESUS are to shine His Light so brightly that others will exclaim,

“Hey, Shine that Light over Here.”

For if we do not share Jesus with others, who will?

Let the Light for Jesus shine so brightly, so overly large, that others will see and know we are a child of God, a Christian.

Let the Light for Jesus shine so brightly, so overly BIG, that others will see how they are in darkness and in need of the Light of the World!

Matthew, an apostle and disciple of Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah, a prophecy spoken years before the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and one foretellingJESUS, the Light of the World!

“THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN
DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT,
AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE
LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH,
UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.”

(The Gospel According to Matthew 4: 16 NASB)
