A walk through life toward eternity

The Comfort Found

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”

(The Psalms 32: 8 NASB)
  • How many of us struggle with the enemy?

Look around you; see all the hands raised in agreement because the same devil plagues us all.

  • How many of us struggle to walk in discipleship to Jesus?

Look around you; see all the hands of Christians raised in agreement.

When I was a child, my dad would keep his eye on me, and many times, he would acknowledge this fact by stating;  “You better behave.  I’m watching you.”  As a child, I heard his words and felt fear because I knew that dad meant what he said.  If I acted like a fool, then there would be consequences because my dad would see my actions and bring punishment to me.  He had my attention, early on, even before I could conjure up a single foolish action in my mind.

Many think of Father God like this, fearful that when they mess up, God will swoop in and bring consequences.  Now, it is true; God could because God is God!  Furthermore, we will be judged by our actions and lack of actions when we stand before the throne of God on Judgment Day.  All of this is 100% true, but for a moment, let us focus on the other lesson to be gained through this psalm.

“I will instruct you”

[I also will] “instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; . . .”

  • Do we sense the Comfort Found in being watched by Almighty God, instructed by our Teacher & taught by the Father?
  • “I will counsel you . . . ” Consider the Comfort Found in knowing God will speak to us directly.
  • “with My eye upon you.”  Ponder the depth of Comfort Found in being watched (over) daily by our loving Father.

God does not shine a spotlight into our future selves, but God does shine His light on the path below our feet, illuminating the way we should go.  Just enough light, Just enough guidance, Just enough security to take the very next step we need to take.

THIS IS A DESCRIPTION OF FAITH!

  • WE TRUST—IN HIM!
  • WE GIVE OUR LIVES—TO HIM!
  • WE OFFER UP OURSELVES—IN SACRIFICE TO HIM!

WE DO—BECAUSE HE LOVED US FIRST!

WE DO—BECAUSE HE PROMISES TO FAITHFULLY NEVER LEAVE US ALONE!

Believe & Experience the Comfort Found in God’s Promises because the Bible speaks this so!

Father God does not, will not & cannot lie because—

“God is not a man,
that He should lie,
Nor a son of man,
that He should repent;
Has He said,
and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken,
and will He not make it good?”

(Numbers 23: 19 NASB)

So, I ask again—

How many of us struggle with saying, “No” to the enemy?

How many of us struggle to walk in discipleship to Jesus?

Discipleship is costly, and quite simply—It is impossible to walk the path of Jesus all alone.  We need the guidance of His Holy Spirit, who dwells deep within us:  guiding us, instructing us, teaching us, counseling us, keeping His eye on us, illuminating the path in front of us & directing our very next step.

  • May we willingly surrender our sinful, selfish will—to HIS WILL!
  • May we lay down our lives, our desires, our wants—to LIVE for HIM!
  • May we take up our cross, deny ourselves—to FOLLOW JESUS!

This is exactly what our Savior asks of His disciples!

“Then Jesus said to His disciples,
“If anyone wishes to come after Me,
he must deny himself,
and take up his cross and follow Me.”

[Then Jesus lovingly reminds us why we should.]
“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it;
but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”

[Then Jesus lovingly explains just what it is we mere humans cannot keep.]
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

[Then Jesus lovingly reassures us just what is coming—NEXT.]
“For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels,
and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.”

[Then Jesus lovingly beckons all people to Him so that they will receive His eternal life.]
“Truly I say to you,
there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death
until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

(The Gospel According to Matthew 16: 24-28 NASB)
