Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

In Need of Water

Jesus was weary and thirsty.  He was traveling from place to place, and on this particular day, Jesus was headed to Galilee. The sixth hour had arrived (high noon according to Jewish time & six o’clock according to Roman time), but the time of the day did not really matter, except to note, the drawers of water had already gone home.  So Jesus sat down at Jacob’s well waiting, for He knew someone would come along who would be in need in water.

“Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

(John 4: 9 NASB)

We will meet someone today who is in need of water.  Whether we are prepared to share a drink of water with them or not is vitally important.

Jesus Christ brought to us the gift of God;

it is He who provides living water.

“She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep;
where then do You get that living water?”
“You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”

(John 4: 11-12 NASB)

God Himself made a way through the sea.

He made a path through the raging, mighty waters.

It was the LORD who caused the chariots and the warriors to not rise again to defeat His chosen.

Like a candle wick that is extinguished for the night, it’s the LORD who defeated the enemies of His people, and He told them:

“Do not call to mind the former things,

Or ponder things of the past.

Behold, I will do something new,

Now it will spring forth;

Will you not be aware of it?

I will even make a roadway in the

wilderness,

Rivers in the desert.

The beasts of the field will glorify Me,

The jackals and the ostriches,

Because I have given waters in the

wilderness

And rivers in the desert,

To give drink to My chosen people.

The people whom I formed for Myself

Will declare My praise.”

(Isaiah 43: 18-21 NASB)
  • Who do we know who is in need of water?
  • Who do we know who is wandering in the desert?
  • Who do we know who is in the wilderness?
  • Who do we know who needs to meet the LORD?

Jesus knew:

  • what the Samaritan woman needed, and maybe that’s why he sat down beside Jacob’s well that day.

Jesus knew:

  • she came there in the heat of the day when others were home with their families.

Jesus knew:

  • she was not welcomed to draw water when others were present.

Jesus knew:

  • she was a woman who was filled with sin.

Jesus knew:

  • she needed a cup of the living water that only He could provide.

Jesus knew!

“Jesus answered and said to her,
(when she saw Him sitting beside the well &
when she asked Jesus how he was going to draw the water)
“Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

(John 4: 13-14 NASB)

Today, we will encounter those who do not know Jesus.  It is up to us that we build a relationship so that we are able to share Jesus.  We need to show that we love them, that we want to make a spiritual appointment with them.  We must be about our Father’s business, for there are so many thirsty people wandering lost in the desert of this life.  So, the question becomes:

  • Will we sit beside the well and be willing to speak to them about our Savior when they come to draw water?
  • Will we speak to them about the living water Jesus provides?
  • Will we tell them about the living water they can drink, the water that “will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

The Samaritan woman had heard about the Messiah, the one who is called “the Christ.”  She knew He was coming.  However, on that particular day,

“Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am He.” (John 4: 26 NASB)

She believed Jesus that day, and immediately, she left her earthly waterpot laying there beside Jacob’s well to run into the city and tell others.

“Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done;
this is not the Christ is it?”

(John 4: 29 NASB)

Today, we will encounter those who are in need of water.

We must be prepared to share a drink of water with them.

It is vitally important!

  • Jesus Christ brought to us the gift of God!
  • It is our Lord Jesus who provides living water!
  • It is the Savior of the world who gives them a taste of the eternal, living water!

May we be ready to share Jesus with the thirsty.
