A walk through life toward eternity

We Need A TRUE Foundation to Build Our Lives Upon

When we were children, maybe we were read the story of “The Three Little Pigs,” a narrative that spoke of four characters, three who were friends and one who sought to destroy them (aka—eat them).  If we recall the storyline, then we remember that all three pigs set out to build their homes:  one of straw, one of sticks, and one of bricks.  Then the enemy (the wolf) came knocking.

First the enemy came to the straw house, and after some knocking to gain the occupant’s attention, the enemy proceeded to destroy the little pig’s home.  However, the interesting part is that when the house fell around him, the little pig ran for his life, running to his brother pig’s home, the one made of sticks.

Undeterred, the enemy next came knocking to the house made of sticks, the one where two of the three pigs huddled together.  The wolf (the enemy) came knocking, trying his best to entice the little pigs to allow him to come inside, but they refused, primarily because of fear, for they knew the wolf truly was not their friend.  Thus, the enemy proceeded again to destroy this second little pig’s home, and he was successful, for after puffing and puffing and blowing and blowing, the house of sticks fell around them, toppling at their tiny feet (hoofs).  Just as before, the two little pigs did not stay, standing among the rubble, but high-tailed it out of there, running for their lives to their brother’s home, the one made of bricks.

Straw—Sticks—Bricks:  It’s easy to see the author’s intent of helping the reader understand the material one needs to use in building his home and how one material is stronger than another.  We have experienced the difference between the three building materials.

Straw is used to bed our livestock or to lay on top of our newly scattered grass seed.  Continually, the straw needs to be replenished because of its light and fluffy consistency.

Sticks are used to start fires or sticks fall from trees when storms arise.  Continually, sticks need to be added until the fire blazes, and then logs must be added to sustain the fire.  When the storms come, then we walk around our yards, bent at the waist, gathering the many sticks that have fallen from the trees.  Sticks may be good for building fires, but they are not good for building homes.

Believers have a secure foundation that makes it possible to endure the storms of life.  When reading God’s Word, we find passages that reassure and remind us.

“According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building on it.
But each man must be careful how he builds on it.
For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

(The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 3: 10-11 NASB)

In the very words of Jesus Christ, we see this truth as we read a passage detailing a time he taught His disciples about the haughtiness of the Pharisees and the biblical truth of Whom is our true foundation, our leader, our teacher, and our Father.

“They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.
But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
Do not be called leaders; for One is your leader, that is, Christ.”

(The Gospel According to Matthew 23: 6-11 NASB)

We Need A TRUE Foundation to Build Our Lives Upon, one that will not blow away in the wind when the storms of life come.

In the children’s story of “The Three Little Pigs,” we see this truth revealed.  While not biblical, the simple story resonates with us, reminding us how the three brothers came together and withstood the wiles of their enemy. This was only possible when they gathered in the third little pig’s home, the one made of bricks.  Their enemy (the wolf) came a third time to destroy the little pig’s home, but this time, he was unsuccessful, for after puffing and puffing and blowing and blowing, the house of bricks—STOOD. As unlike before, the three little pigs knew the assurance of the security of the foundation and home where they came together, the one made of bricks.

“According to the grace of God which was given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building on it.
But each man must be careful how he builds on it.”

(The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 3: 10 NASB)

There is a foundation for living, one that we would do well to heed, for we have an enemy.  As God’s children, we need to build upon the true foundation, the one the Lord provides.  We need biblical Scripture teaching us every single day, for we are mere men and women, created beings.  Apart from Christ, we are nothing.  This is a truth we must recognize:  We still need Jesus.

Every hour of every day, despite the number of years since the day of our redemption:  Christians still need Jesus.

We do not know what tomorrow will bring, nor even what will come our way today.  Followers of Jesus, we need the One sent by God to redeem and save us:  Jesus Christ.

“For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.”

(The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 3: 11 NASB)
