Are We Sensing the LORD’S ‘Turning,’ as HE Prepares Us to Come HOME?
It was easy to know I was turning, and it was easy to consider where the ‘turning’ was going to take me—HOME. The roadway was fairly straight, and I could see my ‘turning’ coming, so I clicked on my ‘turning’ signal and steered my Subaru to the left lane. Thoughts ran through my mind: ‘Should I stop by the store or just wait?’ & ‘I wonder if he is asleep or if he has struggled to find rest?’
The ‘turning’ lane was before me as the thoughts ran quickly through my mind, but as I braked my vehicle, slowing to a crawl, it was the first time I ever remember FEELING THE TURNING LANE. Let me explain.
In the Old Testament of the Bible, we read the account of how the LORD used Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt’s captivity and to the edge of the Promise Land. We also read how Moses stood high up on a mountaintop with the LORD and looked in all four directions, seeing the Promise Land but not entering the land himself. The ‘Why’ is a writing for another day, but as we read the account of Moses leading the children through the wilderness and into the receiving of God’s Ten Commandments, we also see the aging of the LORD’S servant Moses. This is where the Bible reveals a changing, a ‘turning’ from one to another.
See the Word of God with me—
“So the LORD said to Moses,
(Numbers 27: 18-19 NASB)
“Take Joshua the son of Nun,
a man in whom is the Spirit,
and lay your hand on him;
and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation,
and commission him in their sight.”
It’s so easy in life to fear change, to fear turning from this to that. Everyone we know seems to enjoy the comfort found in routine, and then the LORD brings to our attention the opportunity to change, to turn, and suddenly we become both excited and afraid at the same time.
As I mentioned, the drive home led me to experience the ‘turning’ from one roadway to another road—in a way I have never ‘felt the coming turn’ ever before that day. Usually, I am ‘turning on two wheels’ rather than slowing ‘turning on all four wheels’ because normally I am speeding through my ‘turns,’ but on this day, I could see the ‘turn’ & anticipate the ‘turn’ & then feel the ‘turn’ below my vehicle wheels.
How, you may ask, can we feel the ‘turn’?
The answer is simple: The highway department painted these large, white arrows on the roadway in the center of the ‘turning’ lane.
One. Two. Three large arrows were easily felt as my vehicle passed over top, and I had the amazing feeling of almost being HOME!
In the Bible, the LORD metaphorically ‘paints’ for us these large white arrows that help us know when we are to ‘turn’ as we go HOME to heaven.
- How, you may ask, can we feel the LORD ‘turning us’ toward the tasks HE has already prepared for us to do? &
- How can we feel the LORD ‘turning us’ toward HEAVEN, moving us in the direction of our ETERNAL HOME?
The answer is simple: THE LORD HAS SENT HIS HOLY SPIRIT TO DWELL WITHIN US AT THE MOMENT OF SALVATION!
Are We Sensing the LORD’S Turning?
Whenever the LORD commissions us to a task HE has prepared for us, to do a job HE has pre-planned for our hands to do—THE LORD’S HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS TO US & WE FEEL THE LORD’S ‘TURNING’ AS HE BEGINS TO PREPARE US TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WILL!
Truly, sometimes we fear change & sometimes we are fearful to ‘turn,’ to leave the comfortable place where we have been for so long, but the Bible explains exactly what we must do when these emotions take us captive.
The Word of God says—
“When I am afraid,
(The Psalms 56: 3-4 NASB)
I will put my trust in You.
In God, whose word I praise,
In God I have put my trust;
I shall not be afraid.
What can mere man do to me?
Sofia Camara sings a beautiful melody that explains the ‘turning’ and the way we must approach the decisions we are making to do the LORD’S will. The walk of faith requires that we must walk as the LORD ‘turns’ us HIS WAY because it is the LORD who is bringing us closer to HOME in HEAVEN with each ‘turn.’
- May we slow down today to hear the Holy Spirit speaking individually to us.
- May we ‘turn’ down the noise of the world and ‘turn’ our hearts to hear the LORD.
- May we ‘turn’ and pick up God’s Holy Word, preparing our hearts to listen to GOD.
- May we ‘turn’ and take up our cross to follow JESUS.
- May we sense the LORD’S ‘turning,’ as HE prepares us to come HOME.
