A walk through life toward eternity

We, too, are Sent

“His sister
[Miriam, the older sister of Moses]
stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.”
. . .
“Then his sister

[then Miriam]
said to Pharaoh’s daughter,
“Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women
that she may nurse the child for you?”

(Exodus 2: 4 & 7 NASB)

The name Miriam from the pages of scripture does not always resonate with every person we meet.  Many in the world know the names:  Mary, Elizabeth, Ruth & Esther, but many do not recognize the tambourine-playing girl who changed the history of the world.  The prophets of the Old Testament understood the significant role Miriam played as she was led by God to help her little brother survive at the hands of the jealous Egyptian Pharaoh.  In looking closely at the boldness and tenacity of Miriam, we pause to remember just exactly what action she performed when she was sent by God & she obeyed.

“So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.
Because the midwives feared God, He established households for them.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying,
“Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”

(Exodus 1: 20-22 NASB)

Miriam was sent by God to rescue her baby brother Moses.  While she hid by the river and watched for an opportune time, Miriam boldly and courageously stepped out to approach the daughter of Pharaoh.  This young girl would not have known the depth of her actions as she was used by God to save an entire nation of people.  As we read about the actions of one young girl, we also recall other women:  Esther, Ruth, Elizabeth, and Mary, the mother of Jesus.

As Christians, as people whose identity is found in Christ Jesus, may we allow the courage and obedience of these godly women to encourage us in our faith walk.

We, too, are Sent into our world, to do that which the Holy Spirit leads us to do.  As our task is revealed to us, we have a choice:  Disobedience or Obedience to the LORD GOD!

Miriam was obedient to the Lord’s call on her life, and she is remembered equally with her brothers Moses and Aaron on the pages of history.  The prophet Micah records this so.

“Indeed, I brought you up from the land of Egypt
And ransomed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you Moses, Aaron and Miriam.”

(The Book of Micah 6: 4 NASB)

Our story is miraculous just as Miriam’s, for we, too, were created for a time such as this.  We face challenges, we face choices & we face decisions.  Our actions or lack of obedience have consequences for ourselves and for those who surround us.

We cannot follow the world and God at the same time.

We cannot be obedient to the opinions of the world and to the Word of God.

We cannot follow God’s will and do our own thing, going our own way.  It is clearly a daily, moment-by-moment decision we must make.  We step forward in faith, trusting our Savior, or we do not.  We place our Hope in God or we trust ourselves and what we can accomplish.  The Bible is clear:  The Lord will not forsake those who seek after Him.

  • We, too, are Sent into our world.
  • We, too, are Sent into our neighborhoods.
  • We, too, are Sent into our workplaces.
  • We, too, are Sent into our families.
  • We, too, who have placed our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, are Sent.
