A walk through life toward eternity

Mirrors, Camels, and Big Wheels & What They Teach Us About Our “Life–Corners”

Fast-food restaurants.
Dollar Stores.
Carwashes.
Grocery Store Aisles.
These are a few of the places where we see mirrors attached to corners, places where we can see down the next aisle BEFORE we make the turn and commit our whole body to the turn.
Corners oftentimes need mirrors.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our lives gave us a supply of mirrors for our use, mirrors that reflected our path BEFORE we committed our whole body to the turn, BEFORE we committed to a choice, BEFORE we needed to turn around because we suddenly realized that we had made the wrong choice or committed to the wrong life–corner!!!
Well……….we do.
We are given daily moments of reflection to know the way we should go.

Yes!!  We are given exactly that gift of “mirrors” to see as we walk through our lives.
Yes!!  We are shown exactly the way we should go, the obstacles that may lay ahead to avoid, and the clarity of the path before us…..EVEN BEFORE WE TAKE THE FIRST STEP.
HOW?  WE MAY ASK.

To better understand, we first need to consider a camel and a wall.   Now, I will readily admit that I do not know hardly anything about camels.  I do not know their culture, food source, temperament, or daily needs…….BUT I Do Know That Camels Do Know Something About Corners, & About Reflections, and About Life–Decisions.  In fact, there are a few Scripture passages in the Bible that explain exactly that.
Clearly, life–corners are meant to be taken, but life–corners are not meant to be taken as if we are riding a Big Wheel as fast as we can, suddenly slamming the pedals backwards, and whipping our handles to one side, forcing our Big Wheel into a slide and facing the opposite direction than what we were first going, as we suddenly come to a stop.   NEVER are we to take life–corners like that because life decisions require prayerful contemplation and prayerful positioning.

That’s where camels and a wall come to be important.
Imagine a camel and a rider coming across the desert; see the camel and rider approach the city wall.  Now in biblical days, cities were constructed with walls surrounding their perimeter, as a wall of protection, as a way to care for the inhabitants, and as a form of entertainment when the people could watch the chariot races atop the city walls (but I digress).
As the camel is directed toward the city wall, the rider would wish to take his camel inside the wall, but the wall was constructed for protection, so the openings were small (rather short), too short for a camel to be led through (standing up on all four legs).  So a camel had to kneel BEFORE he could enter the city.  Now I have only seen this by video and never in person, but knowing the height of camels and the small size of city gates, the videos reveal the methodical way riders “knee–lead” their camels through the city wall and into the city.
We need to approach life just like that—- cautiously and prayerfully, positioning our bodies as we seek the LORD…..BEFORE we make decisions…..BEFORE we make “life-corner” decisions.

  • Since we are not afforded “mirrors,” as we turn down the different aisles of life….&
  • Since we should not slide, turning a 360 as a child riding a Big Wheel….&
  • Since we do not enter our new decisions as camels walking upon bended knees through city gates….

We must turn our “life corners” with the ONE Far Greater!!!

YES.
WE SHOULD APPROACH OUR DECISIONS…..
SEEKING THE LIFE–CORNERS…..
ENTERING THROUGH PRAYER…..

TRULY…..This is a better way to approach our “life–corners” (our life decisions).
Truthfully, the Bible tells us we are to trust God to lead us around and through every “life–corner.”

In the Old Testament, David was inspired by God to pen these words:

“Trust in the LORD and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness [feed securely on God’s faithfulness].
Delight yourself in the LORD;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him;…”

(Psalm 37: 3-7)

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul was inspired by God to write his letter of correspondence to those living in the city of Ephesus, as Paul scribed these words:

“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the LORD is.”

(Ephesians 5: 15-17)

Finally, again found within the Old Testament, Solomon was inspired by God when he wrote:

“My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you,
Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
For if you cry for discernment,
Lift up your voice for understanding;
If you seek her as silver and search for her as hidden treasures;
Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
And discover the knowledge of God.
For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

(Proverbs 2: 1-6)

Prayer. Seeking God’s Direction.

  • Positioning ourselves into a posture of prayer is essential.
  • Searching God’s Word for the “life–corner” mirrors that show us the path we are to take.
  • Kneeling in prayer, entering new decisions, only after we spend some time with God.
  • Helping us to develop patience, trust, dependence, and deeper faith.

Most assuredly, may we not ride through life, as we did as children, speeding recklessly around our “Life-Corners”.
BUT MAY WE ALWAYS SEEK THE LORD’S LEADING, KNOWING GOD IS FAITHFUL TO ANSWER OUR PRAYERS ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.
As we Enjoy a new day, may we pause to also enjoy a beautiful melody titled—-“WaveWalker” by Citizen Way.
