Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

A Math Lesson From the Heart of an English Instructor

Calculus was a class I skipped in high school.  Yep.  Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II…..Math (and English teacher—Nancy) came to an end rather quickly.  Trigonometry did appear to be a fun challenge, but I was unsure of my mathematical-strength, so I called it quits to the subject of math, AND NEVER would I have ever considered taking the course of Calculus!
Thus, when a question came early this morning (one from a beautiful child and her handsome husband, traveling in Greece and sightseeing at Hadrian’s library and Hephaestus’ temple), that question caused me to ponder—How many years was BC?

This question caused my mind to then consider—-SINCE GOD CREATED ALL THINGS, THEN GOD ALSO CREATED CALCULUS. Thank you Sydney for this beautiful, kind of scary truth (in my English mind).
How many years existed before Christ’s birth? How many years have existed after Christ’s birth?
How many years…..counted…..
On the timeline of life,
On the timeline where the number Zero does not exist,  &
On the timeline BEFORE we began counting forward into AD.

Consider that point—EVERYTHING BEFORE & EVERYTHING AFTER—the ENTIRE TIMELINE of LIFE connects to the life of Jesus!!!

Therefore, the concept of “calculus” can be used to describe how everything changes, like the way medicine changes our body over time OR the way our mind pays attention while we are reading an article.  Calculus calculates change, so to calculate the way the world has changed since BEFORE the birth of Jesus & to calculate how much the world has changed AFTER the birth of Christ Jesus….is truly a study of mathematics…..of Calculus…..the course my beautiful daughter loves & the course I totally avoid.

Let’s consider the question asked—a question that leads to a even more important question of Calculus—-How much change occurs once a person Accepts Jesus Christ as Savior??!!!!
In the Bible, David was inspired by God Himself to write about this question. The answer is given to us through God’s Word….provided to all who hope to know the answer.
How much does God know about us?….&
How much change occurs from our first earthly birth to our spiritual birth….&
How much change occurs from our spiritual birth until our earthly death….&
How much change occurs from the time of our earthly death, as we step into an infinite eternity?

Matters of Change.
Matters of Calculus.
Matters to deeply consider, even for this VERY UN-MATHEMATICAL MIND of mine.

Matters of HUGE Importance for all humanity…..Today and Tomorrow and for an eternity of Tomorrows after that !!!

"O LORD [GOD], You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O LORD, You know it all.
You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?...

Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;...

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!...

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way."  (Psalm 139: 1-7 &  16-17  &   23-24)

True….It is important to study time (as on a timeline of life).  BUT….
Also True….It is important to study Calculus, the concept of change.   BUT….
Most True….It is for each of us to BE CHANGED BECAUSE of our intimate relationship with Jesus.  At that exact moment of time when we accept Jesus as Savior (our personal timeline of life)….that is when our “calculus” begins….that is Most Important.

Are we changing? Are we becoming more complete, more ready to meet Jesus?
God knows us.
God searches us.
God knows our thoughts and our words, even before our thoughts and words exist within our mind.
God lays His Almighty hand upon us.
We cannot go anywhere to escape God’s presence.
God knows us.
His thoughts are higher than any sum (total) of ANYTHING!!!
So we ask God….
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me [test me] and know my anxious thoughts [my fears];
And see if there be any hurtful way in me [any unforgiven sin that needs to be confessed],
And lead me in the everlasting way [CHANGE ME].”
(Psalm 139:23-24).
God’s Mathematical Truth for today.  God’s Calculus.
May we find everlasting peace and unspeakable joy within God’s Change.
