A walk through life toward eternity

Clearly, It’s NOT Historical Fiction

My sweet husband often laughs when I speak of my favorite genre:  historical fiction.  He laughs and then says, “How can anything be ‘historical’ and ‘fiction’”?  Agreeably, it does sound totally impossible; nevertheless, when I read fiction (untruth), it is quite enjoyable to read stories loosely based on historical events.  However, when considering the ABSOLUTE TRUTH found in the Bible, fiction and history do not mesh because the Word of God speaks no fiction, only TRUTH.  Even though we live thousands of years removed from the events, still we can TRUST GOD AT HIS WORD.

There are biblical narratives found in God’s Word where we see the LORD’S mercy, noticing how HE graciously provides for His children.  If we dig into what the Bible has to say, then we begin to see the merciful way He continually deals with His chosen ones.  We see the numerous times He answers prayers.   So, it is quite odd how we sometimes find ourselves in a life-situation, and we choose to NOT remember:  We Can Trust God!

  • What happens when we should trust but don’t?
  • What occurs when the LORD gives specific instructions, but we disobey HIM?
  • Are there consequences for our actions, when we willingly choose to stand, to step, or to do in DEFIANCE to the LORD?

As we might expect, the LORD provides us historical narratives to reveal HIS goodness and to remind us that we are to TRUST HIM at HIS WORD.  As the nation of Israel continued to travel to the land God promised, they were called to trust.  Nonetheless, they often did not trust God but turned to their own thinking, and when they did, the consequences were severe.  We can read these narratives throughout both the Old and New Testaments.  Surely, now removed thousands of years, we could learn from their errors and walk differently (in obedience to the LORD); however, as people say:  History does have a way of repeating itself.

  • Does it need to be this way?
  • Do we need to heedlessly walk through life, doing our own things, acting and reacting to situations?

Could we not instead dig into God’s Holy Word and study those who came before us, learning from their sinful ways, so they do not become ours?

  • Clearly, the Bible:  It’s NOT Historical Fiction.
  • Truly, God’s Holy Word provides Historical Truth!

God calls His children to be holy.  As we read the Bible, HE even provides us instructions how.

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Hoy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
because it is written,

“YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

(The 1st Letter of Peter 1: 13-16 NASB)
