Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

GOD loves Us & GOD hates Sin

  • Have you ever been convicted by the sin you commit?
  • Do you ever find yourself comparing your life to others’ lives, thinking, ‘My sin seems sweeter than their sin’?
  • Could it be that we are really all just the same:  SINNERS who but for the love of God are doomed for separation from the goodness of God?

Without a doubt, God loves us & assuredly, God hates sin.  The Bible tells us so, and the Word of God even speaks of the judgment we will face for the sin we commit.  It is truth:  We will experience the fierceness of God’s wrath for our unconfessed sin, both the sins of commission and the sins of omission.

  • Commission—Doing those things we know we should not do.
  • Omission—Not doing those actions we know we should be doing.

We are reminded throughout the Word of God how God’s judgment is certain.

“There are six things which the LORD hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:”

(The Proverbs 6: 16 NASB)

Let’s unpack these seven sins of commission mankind commits that the LORD hates.

  1. “Haughty eyes”—pride, arrogance, superiority that looks down upon, one who rejects God’s authority.  Remember how it was pride that caused the fall of Lucifer, and he became Satan, the one we know who prowls looking to devour—the devil.
  2. “a lying tongue”—falsehood, deceit, fraud, slander. Mankind has been messed up since the fall of Adam, but God is Truth and obeying God’s Truth makes us free.
  3. “And hands that shed innocent blood”—the taking of innocent life, murder that takes root inside our heart, for we can kill another’s reputation even with our tongue.  The Lord holds us accountable.
  4. “A heart that devises wicked plans”—evil thoughts made in one’s heart because we know our thoughts lead to our actions.  God judges our hearts.  The Bible tells us so.
  5. “Feet that run rapidly to evil”—running and lacking resistance when tempted to sin.  We violate God’s law when we uncaringly and purposefully commit sin.
  6. “A false witness who utters lies”—giving a false testimony.  We are called to hold our tongue.
  7. “And one who spreads strife among brothers”—causing division & conflict.  The Bible tells us plainly that we are to love others and not seek to sow malicious gossip.

Now maybe you (like me) have read the above list and saw your own self (just as I did).  Then after this short list of sins mankind commits, the Bible lists additional sins the LORD hates.  We read the sins:  Idolatry, Sexual Immorality, Injustice, Greed, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Slothfulness, and on & on.  These are the sins mankind commits because of the temptations of the devil.

However, what about the sins of omission, of actions we fail to do?  Are we exempt from God’s wrath for those?  No, the Bible says we are not, for we will be judged for the actions we know to do but fail to (do).  Here is a short list, a few examples:

  1. Failing to care for those in need.  We only need to read in the Bible the narrative of the Good Samaritan to see the teaching of Jesus about this sin.
  2. Failing to love others.  We can read several Scriptures that emphasize how failing to love others is sin.
  3. Failing to honor God or not seeking God with our heart, strength, & mind.  We know this is sin.
  4. Failing to share the Gospel.  We know that we are to share our faith, our testimony with those who the Holy Spirit leads us to, and to not share Jesus is sin.

Maybe this would be a great place to pause to listen to a melody:  “More Church Than Church” by Unspoken.

Assuredly, God loves us!   &

Without a doubt, God hates sin!

We know God will judge all men fairly and with impartiality.  The Bible tells us so.

“But do you suppose this, O man,
when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself,
that you will escape the judgment of God?
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience,
not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart
you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath
and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,”

(The Letter of Paul to the Romans 2: 3-5 NASB)

God’s Word is clear; there is not distinction between sinners.

ALL SIN IS DETESTABLE TO GOD!

“as it is written,
“THERE IS
NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
THERE IS
NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS
NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER
THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Romans 3: 10-12 NASB)

We live in a world where humanity believes ‘doing good’ is enough or that we are ‘good enough.’

  • We cannot do enough ‘good’ to cover our sin.
  • We are never ‘good’ enough to erase the mark of our sin.

However, there is ONE who covers our sins with His shed blood.

JESUS CHRIST THE SAVIOR!

Thus the question must become:  What must I do to escape the LORD’S wrath for my sins?

The only way is not some abstract concept, but One of Truth & Life.

“If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and righteous

to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

(The 1st Letter of John 1: 9 NASB)

Yes, truly, God loves Us!

But just as true: God hates Sin!

May we trust Him, trust His Word. &

May we realize that it is through our confession of sinwe are made whole (again & again).
