A walk through life toward eternity

Changing Landscape—Seeing the Eternal Truth

Mankind is incurably religious.  Consider this statement before rushing on, before reading another word.

Something deep within a human wants to worship.  Pause to consider the depth of this.

If you drive down my mother’s road, you will see what remains of the forest where my siblings and I played as children.  We often ran outside the house, grabbing rakes, boards, and shovels (our tools) and raced into the woods.  Our intent lay deep within our hearts.  We were intent to construct a playhouse.  My brother and I crudely fashioned our version of a playhouse, mapping out rooms, creating ‘play-space’ (his and mine).  However, my younger sister and our neighbor cousin perfected this action, for they expertly constructed their play-space, spending hour-upon-hour fashioning a beautiful space.  Even today, years later, one only needs to walk within the remaining part of the woods to see the remains of their dearly beloved play-space.

Since the logger has begun felling the trees, only a part of the forest remains because my brother (the current owner of the forest) has commissioned this logger to fell the trees, to make space for a future cattle pasture.

Today, as you drive down the road, heading to mom’s house, you will see the gaping landscape where trees once stood.  This truth found in God’s creation remains true within the forest and also within a man’s heart.

Just as landscape changes over time, a person’s heart can also change with the passage of time.

Just as the trees are felled, a person’s heart can feel the prick of the Holy Spirit speaking and begin to change, to soften, and to begin to REALLY SEE THE ETERNAL TRUTH ABOUT GOD.

Every Human Has a Choice—

We can worship ourselves, being happy within our being when we “call our own shots,” when we say:  “I’m the boss of me,” and we are in control of ourselves.

When we place worship upon our own self, then we have set up an idol, an image, and we have placed ourselves up in place of the one true God.  The apostle Paul wrote to the early believers living in Rome, helping them understand.

For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes,
His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen,
being understand through what has been made,
so that they are without excuse.”

For even though they knew God,
they did not honor Him as God or give thanks,
but they became futile in their speculations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Romans 1:  20-21 NAS)
  • Unbelief has consequences.
  • Refusing to see what’s right there in front of themselves was spiritual blindness.

As true as this was when Paul wrote to the Romans, it still remains true today.

  • Unbelief has consequences.
  • Refusing to see what’s right there in front of ourselves—spiritual blindness.

As I drove into mom’s driveway last week, I looked toward the remaining trees standing, trees that would soon not remain.  I found myself considering the passage of time, knowing that it was imperative that I take a final walk through these woods before the trees no longer remained.  Just as with fading landscape, one’s heart can become changed with the passage of time.  When someone begins to hear the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus, then the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit begins to speak to the unbeliever’s heart.

Horribly true is that a person can know “about” God, enjoying His creation and still not really KNOW GOD through a personal relationship with His Son Jesus.  This may be the ONLY reason the LORD has allowed the believers, the followers of Jesus to remain here on earth—so we can witness and testify to those who can’t yet see.

“Lord,

Help us be faithful within this one span of a day to testify about the goodness of You.

Help us to share our testimony, sharing Jesus with another who cannot yet clearly see You.

We pray, asking for these, in Jesus’ name.  Amen.”

“For even though they knew God,
they did not honor Him as God or give thanks,
but they became futile in their speculations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.”

(The Letter of Paul to the Romans 1:  21 NAS)
