Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

“The LORD is God, and He has given us light;”

  • What makes a person different?
  • When someone looks into the mirror, studying himself, can he see his distinct difference?
  • As one walks down the sidewalk, passing others as he goes, can they see his distinctness?
  • Pagan.
  • Christian.
  • Can we tell the difference?
  • What makes a Christian distinct from all the rest?

These are the many questions the world collectively asks, questions that are answered at one’s death.  Today, though, let us ponder the solitary statement—

It is imperative that we (the Christians, the children of God) LIVE TODAY as though TODAY could be THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY of LIFE.

The late Reverend Billy Graham wrote:

“You will never live this day again; once it is gone, it is gone forever.  How will you spend it—for yourself, or for Christ?  Remember:  “Only what’s done for Christ will last.” (Hope for Each Day 2012)

The author who wrote to the Hebrews wrote:

“Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood,
He Himself likewise also partook of the same,
that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death,
that is, the devil,
and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
For assuredly He does not give help to angels,
but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham.

[that is all mankind, all of humanity]

Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things,
so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God,
to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

[so He made Himself the substitution:  His life for ours]
[so He made the only way by which mankind might be saved]

(The Letter to the Hebrews 2: 14-17 NASB)

Yesterday was a somber day, one that many will remember for many days to come.  This was the day when so many lost their lives, when so many met death face-to-face.  The tragedy in the sky shook the nation, as the plane landing at Reagan National Airport collided with a military helicopter.

As I walked into each class meeting, the tragedy permeated the air.  Usually, the class begins with attendance, followed by a specifically chosen devotion.  Then we study writing & English concepts, followed by a prayer at the close of our class.

Yesterday was different.  On that day, the class began with attendance, followed by prayer for those families who lost loved ones, as we asked God to comfort those who lost so much—a dear brother, sister, mother, father, husband, wife, colleague, grandchild, grandparent, or close friend.  Despite the relationship, the loss of the lives that seemed to be taken so abruptly was palpable within the room as we bowed our heads to pray.

We know—

  • Our days are numbered.  The Bible says so in The Psalms 139: 16.
  • The Bible tells us we must not boast about what we might do ‘tomorrow.’ The Proverbs 27: 1.
  • God’s Holy Word states:  “You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” (The Letter of James 4: 13-16)

Since we know all of this to be true, what keeps us from walking within THIS SOLITARY DAY, LIVING as though TODAY could be the MOST IMPORTANT DAY of LIFE? !!!

  • Jesus came to earth from heaven.
  • Jesus came and took on human flesh.
  • Jesus allowed Himself to be tempted by Satan, just as we are tempted.
  • Jesus, THE MESSIAH, remained sinless!
  • Jesus willingly gave His life, crucified on Calvary’s cross.
  • Jesus, the son of man & the Son of God, died and was buried in the tomb.

Days passed—three in fact, proving to the watching world that Jesus truly was dead.

Then Father God raised His only Son, the SAVIOR, to new life!

Why?

So, we too, who believe, who give our heart to Jesus, who seek His forgiveness for our sins, who receive God’s free gift of salvation—WILL BE SAVED & BE HEAVEN-BOUND AT OUR DEATH!

  • What makes a person different?
  • When someone looks into the mirror, studying himself, can he see his distinct difference?
  • As one walks down the sidewalk, passing others as he goes, can they see his distinctness?
  • Is he a Pagan OR Is he a Christian?
  • Can we tell the difference?
  • What makes a Christian distinct from all the rest?

We are to live for God today, different from the world.

We are to live for God today, so that even if today is our final day here on earth, we will have lived for God, just as we should.

The psalmist wrote to remind us—the children of God, the Christians—explaining exactly how we must walk distinctly from all the rest, different from the unbelievers.

“This is the day which the LORD has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
O LORD, do save, we beseech You;
O LORD, we beseech You, do send prosperity!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD;
We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.
The LORD is God, and He has given us light;
Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, I extol You.
Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

(The Psalms 118: 24-28 NASB)
