Morning Thoughts

A walk through life toward eternity

What’s Needed….Every Day of Life

When little, we play.  We wake up with “playing” on our mind, we play throughout every day, and we play until we are forced to take a bath and go to bed, hearing our parents promise, “You can play again tomorrow, but first you must go to sleep.”
Playing.  Life was so simple…..back when we were children.

Fast forward.  Today we have reached the all-hoped-for adulthood, the place in our lives when we are FINALLY able to make our own decisions.  We can go wherever we want to go, do whatever we hope to do, see and be all we ever wish to be……and all we want to do (you got it)—–PLAY.
We work and work and work and work….and then work some more, storing up all our playtime together into one holiday, one vacation, one moment out of the year when we are not working, but instead….PLAYING.

Why is that so?
Why do we compartmentalize our lives into these two categories, separating the fun play from the work?
Why do we fall into bed at night….exhausted from our day of work, so ready for the day to be over, setting our alarm so we do not oversleep, and hopeful for the weekend when we can FINALLY PLAY?   & Ones where we NEVER WISH for the weeks to end, for the days to pass, or for the moments to cease?   &
Why do we store up days of play, ones where we fall into bed, exhausted, yet excited from our day of play, sad for the day to end, Never oversleeping on a day of play, and hopeful the week NEVER ENDS, for the days to pass by, for the memory-filled moments to EVER END?
Why do we compartmentalize our moments, days, weeks, months, and years into the “workdays” and the “play days”?

This is a topic Martha spoke to Jesus about one day (way back then in the 1st Century) as she was scurrying around the kitchen, trying to prepare a meal for her friends, and upset because her sister Mary was not helping her (at all).

Instead, Mary was spending time, focused upon her Lord, undistracted, unbothered, and unworried about the day’s work or the day’s play…..As Mary placed her eyes upon Jesus and sat at Jesus’ feet.

This was a topic worthy of understanding within the 1st Century &

This is a topic worthy of understanding today within the 21st Century.

Martha was distracted with all her tasks & Mary was merely playing and just sitting.

Martha didn’t like that at all. In fact, Martha thought Jesus would surely see Mary’s WRONG & Martha’s RIGHT.

“But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him [up to Jesus] and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me” (Luke 10:40).

Are we working our way through life, striving to Do all that we can DO, hoping to BE all that we can ever BE, and upset when others have found the BEST way for Living Life while we have only discovered a good way, possibly one that is even better than good.
Jesus seeks for us to find the BEST WAY of living our years, months, weeks, days, and moments.
Yes, truly working is not bad. Neither is playing better than working. BOTH parts of life are needed.
So what is the point of (the lesson found within) this Bible passage?
The point is this—-We are only required to do one thing, one necessary task to live the BEST LIFE…..EVER!!!!
Jesus shares this truth with Martha, and today, he is sharing this truth with us.
Our days are not this type of day or that type of day.
Our days are not sectioned into “work” days and “play” days.
That may be a GOOD way to live, but it’s not the BEST way to live.

“But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41).

Mary understood the necessary thing, the BEST thing she needed, &  Mary knew she needed this One Thing, this Best Thing every day—on play days and on workdays.
Mary understood that sitting at the feet of Jesus was an “EVERY SINGLE DAY, a NECESSITY FOR HER EVERY DAY (both on working days and on the holidays of play).

  • Sitting at the feet of Jesus…..Every Day of Life is the BEST, most NECESSARY part of our relationship with our LORD.
  • Spending time with Jesus (undistracted and not bothered or worried)…..Every Day of Life is the BEST, most NECESSARY part of our relationship with our LORD.

May we today give God our undistracted attention.

May we go throughout this day (whether it’s one of work or play) undistracted and unbothered, but instead FOCUSED UPON OUR SAVIOR AND LORD.

Most definitely, it is NOT the “type” of days we live and enjoy that matter.  Instead, it’s the “PERSON” we FOCUS upon who matters more.

One Thing.  One Person.  One Focus.  One Priority….JESUS is All That Matters as we play and work all 365 days of every year.   Help us, LORD, see how we need YOU…..Every Day of Life.
